Here is a 1/43 all metal kit I am building for a client. It will feature engine detail and an opening boot. Photos of the kit are shown and I will post my progress as the build moves along...

Its a nice base kit, and the shape is good to my mind, if anybody can find one it would make a good introduction to building something with a bit more 'depth' to the detailing.

Something I never thought about before starting the build was that the car ran at Le Mans with the full width windscreen lowered and this gets in the way of the bonnet opening. So the windscreen has to hinge as well, now that was a delicate job, although it could be built with the windscreen down and a lift off bonnet slid underneath.

And as one can see from the kit the doors need to be cut open and fabricated from brass sheet. I assume you also re-made the bonnet and boot covers? The inside of the doors look very simple.

I found this on the internet and think it is a damn good buy! It's from CMA who have a very good reputation.
"Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta, Le Mans 1949 winner, driven by Luigi Chinetti, Sr. 1:43 scale. Nicely detailed hand crafted model mounted to a solid walnut base with plaque personally autographed by Luigi Chinetti, Sr. We’ve used plaques that were autographed for us in in 1992. Only a few available! Great piece of automobilia at a very reasonable price. $129.00"

Sounds like a "fire sale" to me ;) And is it a handbuilt or a die cast?

Nobody 'needs' to open the doors or to remake the bonnet and boot lid in brass sheet to make a great model from this kit. And I wouldn't recommend anybody but an experienced amateur trying on this car because of the complication added by the bonnet duct, door panel lines and boot lid number plate indent. Better choose a car with flatter panels for a first attempt and perhaps something where the bonnet or boot does actually lift off rather than hinge. Yes the inside of the doors is simple, just the grab cords and interior door catch, no window winders or padded luxury in those days!

There are some images and a nice cutaway drawing of a 166MM here

I have tried, but its a lot more difficult than it looks! Especially when the body has curves like this one!
Thats the reason why its SO good, it looks simple, but he techniques applied are tremendous.

I can build reasonably, but have not the talent nore the skills to be create this quality.

Yes, I agree with the comments on the bonnet and boot...not an easy task, but the doors...not so bad IMO ;) I have always had a problem with makers opening the bonnet and boot but not the doors...it makes no sense. Oh wait, maybe it does...it's a cabriolet, who needs opening doors...just jump in!

Why not go all the way? Here are some progress pictures. A lot of dremel work with a large cutter. Once I have the desired thickness I simply drill a series of holes and then go at it gently with my exacto. Some additional grinding to accept hinges and some fine filing and the basics are done. Now I will need to bridge the sills to the frame and make up new doors.

The 166 looks like nothing more than a die-cast on a wooden base with a plaque to me. As to Barnett's models, yes, they are expensive, but there are others doing similar work, and some of those models are $10,000!

Some more reference. The Tron kit is missing a few details, i.e. the correct firewall and airbox [vs the air cleaners in the kit]. These are all easy to fix. Note the painted window frames...hmmm. And the color appears a little darker than what I have seen so far. I need some better engine compartment reference for this project ;)

Hi Stu - Maybe you should get your eyes tested ;) .The description is "Nicely detailed hand crafted model mounted to a solid walnut base with plaque personally autographed by Luigi Chinetti, Sr." - Look here http://www.cmamodels.com/page111.html - Notice "hand crafted".

This has nothing to do with the original post...any chance we can stay on the subject? I know I chimed in but enough...please. CMA is a good company. Just call Marshall and ask him what kind of model is on the base.

I am very interested how, and what kind of hinges you will make/use. In the real car, they are welded to the chassistubes under the dash.... which makes it kind of tricky... I am thinking of going the same way with a 1:14 MG 166MM kit.
