We do get emotional with such a beauty ;-): Reason seems to fly out of the window. For me the 250GTO (OK, with the 330 P4) is THE Ferrari: the perfect balance between looks and performance (at least during its time). And It was not even penned by a design studio (same thing for the P4). How ironic isn't it???

Anyway, seeing one in the flesh for the 1st time is one of the few things I will never forget...

The GTO's color today is very similar to the old Ford/Shelby Guardsman Blue....then again, Pete Brock told me years ago that Shelby's paint guy was always drunk and the race cars were different colors every week. ;)

I don't know if I'd drive any car in anger with 10 year old tires, they must have been hard as rocks. The red GTO was keeping up with the Daytona that was running full on slicks, though to be fair it appeared to be set up more for tracking. It was certainly fun to watch!

I loved seeing the cars out on the track, if I shelled out 5-10mil for a car you better believe I'd be out there driving it for all it's worth. Too much money to sit and look at it. The thing that struck me at the event was the lack of break-downs. I think a challenge car or two had an issue but I don't remember seeing a vintage car having any issues on the track, which was pretty amazing considering the age (and possible lack of maintainence ala the GTO you were driving).

I assume you are referring to Henri Oreiller.
The car which he and Jo Schlesser owned was 3851 GT.

In October 1962 at Montlhery, France, the Coupes de Salon event, Oreiller crashed into a building and was killed.
I guess the reason it is a major issue with this GTO is that it is the only one of the series that claimed the life of its driver.

The car was rebuit the following year and was competitive throughout Europe with its next owner.

In 1965, 3851 was sold to its 4th owner, an Italian gentleman who made his fortune from mineral water who has owned the car since and has rights to the accolade of owning a 250 GTO for the longest time.

3851 has been offered for sale quite recently but I am not 100% sure how genuine the sale was.

You can recognize this car easily because she has yellow foglights and chromed double side mirrors.

Reading another Forum about a GTO replica, I was thinking to myself: If I had the means what would be the GTO I would choose, or, in the other words what is the most desirable GTO?

Maybe it has to do with originality (unrestored) like 3467GT, or racing credentials (4293GT, 3705GT who respectively won Le Mans in their class), or even 3413GT that won its class at the Targa Florio twice, with 2 different body configurations (63 & 64), or the famously rare 330GTO (3765SA), or, maybe the first GTO made 3223GT?

I wish I had the money, and of course the opportunity to make such a hard decision ;-)

Could it have been Goodbye Charlie? There were a couple of nice cars in the film, though I don't remember a GTO.

On second thought, no. GC was set in Malibu, not Manhatten.
