Should say worlds fastest Ferrari chassis, it has a 540 cubic inch Chevrolet engine in it. Still quite impressive though.

Impressive, I agree with that. But I don't like the fact that it has no Ferrari V8. For this kind of motor sport the engine is much more important than chassis and body so basically it could be any car with a big block.

They're not as fast, but they drive the car with the original engine.

Was this a genuine 288 or a 308 rebodied to look like one?

I also forgot to mention that the 540ci big block had a pair of 80mm turbos putting out 17lbs of boost, so it at least still had a twin turbo v8.

Bob Norwoods site suggests that it is a rebodied 308 with an entirely new stretched subframe. The panels were moulded from originals.

This is the same car that was built for Bonneville over 20 years ago, and hit 199 mph in the stock 288 body configuration. The article states that is the limit for the stock body... which is built on a stretched 308 subframe as you stated. The article is in Sports Car Illustrated May 1988. At the time, it had

    675 hp @7800 rpm N/A 371 CID (Chevy OHV small block can-am) 502 ft-lbs @ 5250
    13:1 compression ratio
ZF transaxle from a BMW M1
Final drive ratio of 3.24:1 was used for Bonneville
    (5th gear was .704 )

Here are the specs from another thread:

"The car has original 288 body panels on a stretched 308 frame
540 big block Chev 2000+ hp
    Dart heads
    Twin 96 mm turbos
Custom intercooler with stainless tank in front
    Motec engine management
B&J four speed with CO2 shifting
Custom Overdrive gears back into Ford ring and pinion turned upside down
    Dual fire systems
    High and low speed chutes
Micky Thompson Bonneville experimental tires (tested at 600 mph)
Rear spoiler and ground effects, 500 lbs lead in nose
In car cameras (video coming soon to a theater near you)

The car was originally built by Bob Norwood and has held the record in the past with a different engine."
