I always thought it was odd how the fuel door has a finger pull indent and just pulls open and yet the oil fill door on the other side is smooth and is a cable pull release from the interior. Why mix and match and have unsymmetrical styling elements on the quarter panels? Why not make both one way or the other?
I always say that the odd things about some of these cars are the very same things that make them so cool. For example, my 328 has the craziest ventilation system (probably like most Ferrari’s of that era). Multiple controls working off of totally different systems - one for AC, another for fan/heat and another for defrost. It’s as if they had separate groups designing each rather than have one team develop them all into one system. It’s peculiar yet very cool.
Another thing I always thought was peculiar but also very cool is how the 288 GTO key set has four separate keys for different functions. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
They are the two 308 keys (ignition and doors) with added ather two keys for the fuel cap and the engine bonnet. Poor solution, but very nice to show. ciao
I think there is a method in this particular madness and that is to prevent fuel being accidentally put into the oil reservoir during a pit stop. The fuel filler should be easily accessible from outside the car, but it should take some effort to open the oil door to avoid mistakes in a Group B rally stage.
that's correct: the car was born to race and (almost...) everything was designed for racing in the FISA Gruppo B ciao
I’m sure. I imagine if I had a 288 GTO I would set the original aside for preservation and only use it for concours presentation.

Jacques, it means pain in the rear, because the revolving locks in these old locking gas caps were made with tin-pot metal and design that tends to bind with dirt and grime that gets into them after 30 years, I feel sure I warned you about this on the GTO we sold you. For example, beneath the fuel flap of our GTO we have a dependable twist-off cap from an F40 Image Unavailable, Please Login

There’s also these intake slots beneath each door, though I’m not certain where they feed air into. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's the "Materazzi mistake" air intake: it feeds the left rear brake (the same on the other side, of course) ciao
That is good news, the issue I mentioned usually manifests itself when you are attempting to refuel, of course, very inconvenient. I think those vents are very cool.
