Does anyone know where I can get a rebuilt 1979 308 gts alternator? Or a new one that doesn't cost $1100.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Oh, if there is one on ferrari uk, please tell me the price, the damn iso view 4 won't download onto my computer.
    Thanks again,
    Jim

I've had excellent luck with the "local" alternator shop.

I think the last time the reworked mine it was no big deal, less than $100.

Later, a brush broke, and they fixed that for $12.

I was pleasantly surprised to get a brand new replacement alternator (Magneti Marelli) from a local car parts supplier for about $150.

The alternator seems to be fairly standard...

Tifosi, you are NOT nuts, just confused. :) You are thinking of the 348 series. The 308/328 series used a Bosch alternator that can be rebuilt by any competent auto electric shop.

A Bosch 65 amp alternator used in the 1980+ Fiat 124 Spider (with A/C) and the 1980 +Lancia Beta is the IDENTICAL alternator. (with A/C) These can be found rebuilt for $50 outright. I've found a N.O.S for $100. There was (may still be there) on eBay that started at $36.

Many Ferrari parts were sourced from the same OEM's as other Italian cars.

So true! I think for us 308/328 owners, it doesn't have to do so much with the cars being unreliable, they are just OLD, and stuff needs general refurbishing.

My car is at the shop getting new upgraded injectors and o-rings, as my original ones were leaking, causing a hot start problem. Heck my 328 is 17 years old!

    Thanks for the reply guys.
I purchased and alternator from Italian Auto Parts in Oregan. My biggest problem is time, and I didn't want to have to succum to spending $1100 on an alternator before I leave. I'm deploying to the middle east on Monday and I would like to get the car fixed before I go. It still may not happen because there was a blizzard in Oregan and nothing is moving out of there yet. I couldn't find any places in Pa that could rebuild it and have it back to me in time so the car would be fixed by saturday. Thanks for the info

Maybe you're confused, too. That is because early 308's used Magnetti Marelli alternators (carb cars mostly) and later ones used Bosch. And then at some point the size was increased to 85A.

Ric's information would imply that the Bosch alternator eBay item for the Fiat Spider listed above would not fit ("most") carb 308s...

Is there an easy way to tell? I'm thinking I should be able to identify the p/n and make on the alternator w/o having to tear it apart.

But what's strange is, I believe I replaced the Voltage Regulator in my alternator with a Bosch p/n. Did even the Magnetti Marelli alternators use Bosch VRs?

The Marelli and the Bosch have the same form factor. They will BOTH fit on the early 308. They will also fit on the later ones (QV) as well if you put on an early 308 bottom bracket and top bracket But won't have the heat shield. I have "T" Rutlands in my back yard and Ted lets me see the stuff he has laying about. I've been a Fiat Lancia guy from waaaaay back and I have a Supercharged 308QV that I'm builing up (sister to Mark Eberhardts motor) that I'm putting into a Stratos replica. I have all the parts in hand to have first hand knowledge here. The alts just don't have the later 308 (heat?) shield. The pully offsets are identical. everything lines up perfectly. Ferrari never changed the bracket mounting holes in the engine block, so this IS the reality.

If you guys WANT to spend $250 + go right ahead, Nothing like bragging rights. But if you want a funtional, form factor correct alternator y'all have to go slummin down to the Fiat world. :) There is also an easy to install kit that uses an outboard voltage regulator (Ford) that will bump up the standard 65 amp unit to 83 amps. Kit is around $40 or so. I've also used thes kits and have 1st hand experience here.

The Marelli / Bosch has 2 mounting tangs on the bottom that straddle the early mounting bracket and one on top for the bent metal bracket.

Later Fait Bosch alternators are a common replacement on earlier (Marelli) Fiats. BOLT IN DIRECT REPLACEMENT. If y'all ever down to Suwanee Georgia I 'll let y'all personally fondle the alternators, early and late 308 brackets etc... for yourselfs. And if your nice, I can show you an EASY way to adapt an -89 Pontiac Lemans alternator (rebuilt to 120 amp output) to a 308 with the use of only 2 spacers.

Could be Ric, I could have sworn my 78 308 carb car had a bosch alternator, but alas, I no longer have the car, and who's to say it wasn't replaced anyway. I've also seen in several articles that the 308 series had only Bosch alternators (increasing in amperage over the years) but who's to say THEY are right either, since we find errors all the time....

All I know is I have never seen a Delco or Japanese alternator on a 308, which was the original question from Tifosi... :)

OK. I will support actual empirical evidence and experience over anything written in a Ferrari Book...

That said, "Original Ferrari V8" (Keith Bluemel), a fairly reputable book but not without its errors, lists that for the 308 GTB/S, the alternator was Bosch 0.120.489.542, with the voltage regulator (internal) was also Bosch, 0.19.20.52.004.

Distributors and coils were Marellis according to the book.

Here is a list of cars that take the same alternator as the 80-85 308 with 65 amp Bosch alternator. I stripped this from an auction on Ebay, so can't vouch for the accuracy...sorry for this thing not lining up correctly...I am a dufus with computers.
