Hi there. I currently own a Fiat 124 Coupe, which I have spent a huge amount restoring and improving, and now I am looking towards the future. i quite like the idea of eventually super charging the Fiat, putting a cage in and basically turning it into a tarmac rally beast. I have taken quite a liking to the 308 GT/4 shape, and I am thinking that it's make a swell daily driver, and the Fiat would be good for weekends and competitions. What are peoples thoughts on the 308GT/4? Keep in mind I cannot afford much more (to be honest I'd be pushing it to reach a GT/4 but I'm prepared to do that) and I am in Australia. They sell for about AUS$50,000 in good condition over here. What should I look out for? Any other thoughts. ideas or general info?
    Cheers,
    Reuben

    Hi Reuben
The Australia section is quite active. They can point you to good (and not so good) GT4's down under.

Typically the goal is to buy the best car for the money. Best in this case means driven and maintained. A car that sits for months at a time is likely to give problems when it finally gets used. E.g. elctrical problems (bad grounds, poor connections), leaky seals, etc.
Make sure the engine has been serviced, belts, idler bearings done at 5 yr intervals.
Check for rust damage, the lower 6" is prone to rusting out if not looked after.
Suspension bushings can wear out, time comsuming to replace.
But, you sound like a handy guy and the above is quite doable with modest skills and tools.
GT4's are wonderful, just ask anyone who is fortunate enough to own one :)

All the manuals and Service Bulletins are on my web site. Along with FerrariChat.com you have a complete service support organization behind you. And a local support group.

I have used my Euro '75 as a daily driver on an 80 mile round trip commute. Gerrit is correct about finding a car that is driven frequently enough. There are many problems in extremely low mileage cars.

Your posting brought tears to my eyes. I bought a new 124 coupe in Europe in 1970, brought it back to the US, and lovingly got 170K miles out of it. Many head gaskets, two transmission (synchro) rebuilds, starter motors, timing belt changes, etc. I figured it was my OJT for owning a Ferrari.

I've had my GT4 about 20 years now and can say the OJT was certainly useful. There are great similarities between the 124 engine and the 308 engine. The 124 was a little easier to work on, but the GT4 has far more robust engineering. You will love the GT4.
