    Hey everyone,

I live in Australia and I just purchased my first Ferrari a few days before Christmas. I became a member of Ferrari Chat a few days later and after browsing the site for a few weeks, I thought I would introduce myself.

I have a 1980 Ferrari 308 GTSi and it is an interesting story of how I came to own it. I originally looked at the car back in 2009, but at the time, it was overpriced and over my budget. It was the first Ferrari I ever looked at to buy.

5 years later I started looking at cars to buy again. I went to see a 348 TS and even arranged to buy a Mondial T interstate but the seller pulled out at the last minute. That's when I found the 308 GTSi which turned out to be the same car that I had looked at in 2009.

Anyway, I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to being part of this exclusive group of enthusiasts!

Hi Mark and welcome to f chat, be sure to post some pictures of that 308. We always like pic's and some history of the car. What was overpriced 5 years ago is now affordable lol, and prices of 308s are on the upswing.
Be sure to check in with the 308/328 sub forum, and the Aussies in the Australia section, fellow Ferrari owners have something in common. Enjoy the ride.

    Hi Mark
Well done on securing your first Ferrari
I am still searching for my first Ferrari and have had a similar experience with a 308QV and an early carb car where the owners decided not to proceed with the sale
    Regards
    David

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I have attached a few photos of my 308. Before anyone says anything, it was originally a US delivered car that was imported into Australia in 1996 and then converted to RHD in 1998.

The conversion has been done well and while I am a sucker for originality, I try to be realistic with what I want from my cars. For this one, I wanted a car that I could drive and enjoy regularly, without being worried about affecting it's value. For the price, this car was perfect for me.

There are a few areas that need attention, which I will be working on over the next year. One of which is a major service which is now due. I am considering doing this myself as I do this kind of work for my other cars, but being that I have never worked on a Ferrari before, I may enlist the services of EnzoTech for this one.

I am currently looking for a 1980 GTSi Parts Catalogue in PDF form however I haven't been able to find one. If anyone knows where I can get one, can you please let me know? Otherwise I will have to purchase one for around $300 on eBay!

    DMWC,

If I had one piece of advice for buying your first Ferrari, it would be that if you are not completely satisfied with what is available for sale in your price range, simply wait for the right car to come along. You never know what might show up at any time!

Ferrari Chat has already been a great source of information and only after a few weeks I feel as though I would be lost without it!

    Hi Mark
I am quite happy to wait till the right car hits the market. I am after a car to hold for the long term so I am in no rush.
As for your search for a parts catalogue - I found a post the other day on Ferrari Chat that loads of Manuals for a variety of Ferrari models. I have had a look and can not find it again but when I stumble across it I will let you know where it is. I think it was in the Australian section.
BTW where did you find you car - private sale or dealer ?
    Regards
    David

I purchased my car through a company called Oldtimer Australia. They sell private cars on consignment, so you basically get the dealer experience for a private sale. I had never heard of them before but they made the experience of buying my first Ferrari an absolute pleasure.

They had the car listed on Car Sales but they also had it listed on their website:

Oldtimer Australia, classic cars, racing cars, sports cars

Thanks for the heads up about Oldtimer Australia - I check out their website regularly to see which cars they have in stock or on consignment.
In response to your question about a parts manual for your 1980 GTSi I suggest you trawl through the Aussie Exotics chat forum as there are a wide range of manuals and PDF documents for most 308 variants. You may find the document that you are looking for.

I've been looking for quite a while and the best resource I was able to find was at the Ferrari Database:

    All Ferraris

They have the part catalogues for the early carburetor cars and the QV but not the GTSi. These are fine to refer to for most of the bodywork as it is the same but when it comes to mechanical, things are a little different.

I will keep looking but after a while I might bite the bullet and just buy one, even though they are very expensive. They are an invaluable resource, almost as good as a workshop manual in some cases!
