Hi... I have been having some issues with the temp and not quite sure what to make of it. The fan switch is 170 degrees... fans kick on nicely. I have a temp gun and the radiator was around 170 - 180 degrees, but in the car, the temp gauge was reading past middle of >195. I went to the engine with the temp gun and it was reading around 205 on the block near the plugs. It was hot today... just want to make sure I don't ruin my engine or anything... coolant was definitely circulating and I realize the coolant at the front of the car will be cooler than the rear... any comments appreciated. thanks.

That sounds normal to me. Barely adequate radiator + barely adequate fans means temps can go up a little in traffic. I assume on the highway it's bang on the middle?

The dash temp gauge reads from the coolant in the block before it goes to the radiator, so it will be higher than what's in the radiator. The thermostat tries to limit the block temp to somewhere around 195 in my experience. I bet that spec is in the worksop manual somewere. BTW, I've found that the thermostats in the two 308s I've owned did a poor job keeping the engine "warm enough" when it is cold, but did manage to keep the upper range around 200 with a working radiator system.

The fan temp sensor is on the output side of the radiator so the water in the radiator will likely be higher than the fan switch setting (when hot, not moving, etc.)

Putting in a lower temp fan switch only makes the fan run more, it won't really make the car run cooler under stress. A proper 190F switch won't be the cause of an overheating issue.

Temperatures must stay under 95 C if everything is ok, whatever the car is driven: Radiator must be redone, water pump ok and fan switch set at 87 C.

    Ciao
