Hello, my 308 gts has an even number VIN. Someone else has one like that?. A friend told me that is not common & Ferrari used to store even numbers for special orders. Does anyone know if this is true ?.
    My vin code is "29918"
    Thanks.

Never heard of that, but that doesn't mean anything. Dino's have even # vins, Ferrari's have odd # vins.

Originally, Ferrari used even serial numbers for race cars, and odd serial numbers for road cars - so the friend is wrong.

I don't know at what point Ferrari stopped that practice.

Well, at least my 79 GT4 is consistent along those lines... It's even-numbered!

I would be very suspicious it was a fraud of some nature. Except for Dinos and race cars Ferrari used exclusively odd numbers until 75000 which took place in October 1987.

    Interesting...

Yes all of the Ferraris I have seen on 5 digits, were odd numbers on a street car

Posters are also correct the Dinos were a different sequence "from Ferraris".
Very interesting given the data reference above, too.

There were several theft rings in Europe that stole Ferraris with odd serial numbers and restamped them with even numbers so they could not be traced. A little slight of hand with a friend at the registration office and a new owner had a bargain Ferrari, or a big profit was made. In the olden days, many did not know that most street Ferraris came with odd numbers and Dinos and competition Ferraris came with even numbers. At least until TR 75000.

Your car Is a white/black 308 GTS sold new by the official dealer in Paris, Charles Pozzi, This according to Matthias Urban's " supplement #1 to the Handbuch der Ferrariseriennummern".
But no, This Is not normal and very, very strange. There is no other street-going Ferrari with an even serial number before 75000. Is it stamped That way on the frame in the engine compartment?
You could, of course, check with the Factory in Maranello, but at the risk of opening a big can of worms if the answer is "That such a car does not exist"...

if it was my car ... and it would show the same vin everywhere (aka frame, column, door), and further if it is now officially registered in your country with title, license plate, papers etc. ...

as Bruno probably implies - I would not do anything here to change that ! ;)

here you are my documents: just 5 digits.

    Original, Jan 07, 1981

    ciao

    EDIT:

I'm sorry, I realized just now that "even" means also a number that ends with 0 or 2 or 4 or 6 or 8.

    ciao

    Alberto,

    "even" is "pari" in Italiano.
    "odd" would Be "dispari".
What would You think of a vintage Ferrari with a "pari" châssis number?
    Curious, isn't it?

308 GTBs were to intended be badged as Dinos. They only became Ferraris just before production began. I doubt that this explains the even SN but who knows?

It would be a bit strange, but not impossible. I could tell strange things 100% factory originals for hours... :)

    Hi Claude,

Suppose the Factory answers "no, it's not legit: such a car does not exist, sorry".
Then what? No one would touch it, even with a ten foot pole...

Yes you're right! So you mean just keep the car with a big QUESTION MARK and let the next buyer do his homework ? Sure if you ever sell a car that you know is fraudulent you're in trouble. If you don't know you have no bad intention.

    Good point!

If I were the OP, I'll keep all the finding private after reading all the comments above. This is a public forum :D

Unless all other locations are marked with a matching set of odd serial number. Discussion will end...

This question needs to be answered! Is the serial number stamped on the chassis in the engine compartment the same as the number on the steering column plate?

You missed an earlier post -- after SN 75000, they used both odd and even numbers on the Ferrari road cars.

All Dinos, 206, 246 and 308GT4 have even numbered chassis nos.

I dont know enough about the Pininfarina 308 to answer the question.
