I have an opportunity to buy a 360 with 12,500 miles on it. However the Carfax shows that owner 3 only owned it for 7 days, between 10/5/2007 and 10/12/2007 but the mileage changed from 4,500 to 11,300 during those 7 days. Numbers either side of that owner support that the numbers are correct but that would be tough to do. Can anybody suggest what may have been going on during those dates ?? Any suggested explanations at all ?

OK - I think I have worked this out - the year must be wrong on the purchase date and it is really one year and one week. What is the point of a Carfax that is not accurate ?? Oh well, I will buy it and join you guys in owning one of the best cars in the world !!

I've figured it out. The guy bought it and put 6,800 miles on it in one week. Assuming he drove 12 hours a day for each of the seven days he averaged 971.4 miles per day at an average speed of 80.9 miles per hour. All reasonable assumptions. Probably wanted to break it in from coast to coast and back again and decided he didn't like it enough to keep. ;-)
That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

carfax is garbage, but unfortunately it's become synonymous with adding or detracting from the car's value based on what it says.

It could be that the previous owner purchased the car and drove the car using a dealer dealer tag. (This would not show a new owner because with a dealer tag he did not have to title it in his name) Before selling the car to the next person he then titled the car into his name with all of the miles he put on it while using a dealer tag.

I'd say this...it's either bad data (as you suspect) or it was driven on an open title which is pretty common on owners with a bunch of cars....

It seems that a CarFax is as reliable (read "un"-reliable :)) as a PPI these days :D

I just saw a friend's 911 GT3 for sale on a local dealer's website. I know the car had an off track excursion and a cross intersection accident that was not his fault that he got into a dispute with the insurance people about. Repairs into the tens of thousands of dollars on the second one - Hit the Carfax button in the dealer's ad = Clean.

    Carfax is truly worthless.

Carfax only reports on what is reported to them/claimed on insurance, and possibly not all insurance companies report. That's the problem. I've had two people hit me in the last 15 years, yet the car I owned at the time the repairs were paid for in cash, so no Carfax report.
