Check out awitalian.com if you're going to replace the heat exchanger. They have one that is upgraded and has 70 cooling tubes rather than the standard 55 tubes according to their website. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just passing along info. Also worth upgrading that water-pump to the revised one with the metal impeller probably.
Im still waiting to hear about the engine rebuild, but the meantime I’ve just been cleaning and fixing up some bits. The OEM 180846 exchanger has 61 tubes, arranged in concentric circles: 24 tubes, 18 tubes, 12 tubes, 6 tubes, 1 tube.
Great thread and enjoy seeing the progress. Still puzzled as to what may have caused the failure. Best of luck!
Update on the project. The shop is waiting on some part quotes, but overall think there is around $10k in parts and machining needed. The crank is expensive (cheaper on the 430’s), and I will need new piston rods (they are hard to match just one or two). Still no clue as to what happened…but they say it’s extremely rare (like a disease on the show House rare). Lucky me Overall, this has been a great opportunity for me: Not quite the bucket list item of a complete rebuild of a Ferrari 308, but close enough!! I made a stop motion of the transaxle heat shield wrap. When I figure out how to do some video editing I will post it. Pro tip don’t have the rivets coated in RTV…that added at least 20 minutes.
Not much to update. Finished cleaning and re-taping the wiring harnesses. Learned how to de-pin connectors to add some new boots to them, and got a few things cadmium plated. Overall it’s going well. I also printed some dust caps for my ECU. My next two projects are flushing the radiators and finishing the heat shields ️. Then I can get back to fixing detail items like sticky buttons and replacing the carpet. Legit work! You should def replace the upper tranmission mount while you have it out. That one looks original and worn out. You can upgrade to the 430 mount. https://www.ricambiamerica.com/237531-gearbox-support-pad.html Not in San Diego by any chance are you?
I agree it looks awful, and the motor mounts were cranked as well. If all goes well I should be able to get it done next week. Thanks for the link! No, I’m in Fort Worth, TX.
Where did you get that heat shield for the diffuser? And how did you attach? I'd like to do that while my bumper is off too. I'm replacing the motor/gearbox mounts and doing the DrS manual swap. Also I don't want to keep harping on the extra things you *could* do, but while it's down I would def send the injectors out to be cleaned. RC injection is one of the originals but there are dozens of places. Everytime I do it do a car it runs so much better. It's amazing how bad injectors can get before you notice or the ECU trips a code. I actually bought my own ultrasonic tester and cleaner. It's paid for itself. I feel like it's a underreported cause of issues too. Imagine one or more cylinders are running slightly lean for an extended period of time, just what that will do to valves and valve seats, etc.
Already, had the injectors cleaned, but just watched a video on the heat exchanger and immediately purchased a new one!! Haha
You can buy one or two rods and balance the set. Thats done all the time. No need to buy all 8 new rods. And the crank? Unless its cracked there is nothing about a crank that cannot be repaired as good as new.
I bought the material from Summit Racing. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/HSP-180023 I’m having trouble getting them to stick on the edges, but I have some ideas for that…
That makes sense to me, but I feel pretty committed down this path at this point. Plus the crank and rods are not all that expensive in the grand scheme of it all. Where do you get stuff done? I am building a pretty good list of resources going through this project, so any new contacts that could help in the future would be appreciated!
Update. Just got my full engine evaluation: one of the liners needs to be replaced, two piston rods are damaged, recommended replace the crank (2200 for a used one), but the heads and valves are all good. We came up with an option for me to do the assembly and they will source the parts for me, so I will get to do a full engine rebuild!! I’m pumped and I get to play with liquid nitrogen when replacing the cylinder liner! I might make some ice cream too. Anyways the number work that keep me around the cost of a used engine, so I’m pretty happy as this has been a dream to rebuild a Ferrari engine since I was 14 (terrifying, but overall exciting).
