It seems that I will be needing to replace the timing chain after all, I have already ordered a new one and should get it next week.

My question: Can the new chain be linked with the old one and "fed" through to replace it OR does the timing chest need to come off?

    Hi,

it can be done like you desribe with the disadvantage of not being able to renew all chain guides. This has been discussed in the forum several times in detail. Just go by the search function and you will find it.

    Great, thank you.

Seems at this point the best is to remove the engine so I can inspect the bearings as well.

You are welcome. It is for sure easier with engine removed. Has your enginge still the original sodium filled valves? If yes it might be an opportunity to change these too at the time.

    Cheers

I don't know, how can I determine if they are?

Do you have recommendations on how to go about removing the engine?

    Thank you for the link.

I will go the way of removing the rear diff, there is virtually no space on the 412 to reach the bell housing bolts to the engine.

Once the diff and torque tube are off, the transmission should down a bit and give access.
