Finally the engine has come out.

To all those attempting to do this I really don't think it is possible to remove the transmission with the engine in place, at least in my case it was impossible (the upper housing of the transmission was catching on the torque converter).

The 6 bell housing bolts were very difficult to get to - best is to just remove engine and transmission as one unit. I also had the differential and torque tube removed.

It is possible as many of us have done it this way.
The torque converter should always come out with the transmission so this should not be an issue.

I see, so the torque converter needs to be unbolted from the flywheel...

What is recommended now to replace the timing chain, and idle bearings? Remove the timing chest?

    Yes, that's right.
All cars will have access points to unbolt the torque converter before separating the transmission from the engine.
Removing an auto transmission without the torque converter will almost always result in at least damaged seals (if not worse) on the transmission input.

Should I inspect the seal on the transmission then? Why/how does this happen?

You need to remove the sump to be able to get the water/oil pumps off before the timing case can come off.

Great. And then the pulley, tensioner, etc.?

Do you have a picture of TDC #1 on the flywheel?

I assume the chain must come off in order to remove the timing chest.

    This area has a gasket.

I would not attempt any work on replacing the timing chain without first removing the camshafts to avoid pistons coming into contact with valves.
The timing chain guide replacement is fairly involved and I would highly recommend studying the workshop manual first to avoid expensive mistakes.

I want to avoid removing the camshafts.

The idea is to use the "business card" method that was suggested.

Line up the 4 camshaft timing marks, and TDC at the flywheel, then remove a camshaft cap, place a business card and tighten it down so it does not move.

Is the crankshaft pulley bolt normally threaded? (Clockwise = tight)

    Torque is 200nm, 150 ft/lbs, yes?

Can the timing chest be removed with the camshaft sprockets on?

It is too difficult to remove the chain with the camshafts in, will have the camshafts remove and then turn the crank and feed the chain out.

Any idea how the water pump shaft is held?

The timing chest is off! Thank you to Al Campbell for the old sump removal tip.

To clarify: Both the water and oil pump gears need to be removed, and this can only be accessed if the oil sump has been removed.

Now onto mounting a new timing chain without a link!

Current state. Awaiting the intermediate gear bearings.

The shop is enjoying the challenge, and Maranello in Egham and Superperformance are fantastic to deal with. Image Unavailable, Please Login
