Another part of my "check list".

What is this spongy material? Is it original and with what can I replace it?

Another question: how does one take out the plastic pump carrier/basket, it does not want to fit through the opening.

The fuel tank foam is not original. It looks like the original rubber fuel pump mount disintegrated and someone used foam to replace it.
The plastic carrier fits through the hole, it is just difficult to get it out. Sometimes removing the metal strap bracket from the carrier will give you a little more room.

Besides the fuel pump mount #126809, you are probably missing the rubber cushion that the plastic carrier sits on in the tank, the original plastic fuel hoses have been cobbled out of copper pipe and rubber and the wiring harness has been remade.

Look at the diagram in the factory parts manual to see how things should look.
