He said he's owned it for about ten years, seems to know Ferraris fairly well in general, used to have a Testarossa. Funny though, when I asked him about the last belt service he said it was done in FL 9 years ago and said he thinks the Ferrari recommended 5 year belt change is silly. So I guess take that as you will. Might not necessarily mean he didn't take care of the car in terms of other things but certainly anyone buying would need to budget for belts ASAP.

By the way, I think he said he's put 10 or 12,000 miles on it over the years.

There were good and bad sets of valve guides. Those with good sets may never need guides over a typical lifespan.

My '99 M with 41K uses no oil and doesn't smoke at all so I can only assume everything is kosher as I don't have any records prior to 2013.

Is there documentation on the "good valve guides." Or is it just cars that have not had the brass guides fail? What were they good ones made of? How can they be identified? Was it after a certain build number?

I've read about this and I've not seen any documentation of "good guides." Just cars that haven't let go yet. I would love to hope Ferrari fixed it.

No, Ferrari didn't fix this problem all over the model years.

Ferrari fixed the F355's valve guides because of the high numbers involved, but not the 456, 456M, or 550 during production. The 575M solved the problem the same way they did on the F355, with sintered steel valve guides.

The good valve guides and sets were the correct bronze mix, while the bad guides were considerably softer and more like brass. Different batches of guides have different properties, but unfortunately they all had the same part numbers. Some cars ended up with mixed good and bad valves. Diagnosis? Wait and see. Some show up early and others at 40,000+ miles.

It is possible to do the job without getting into 5 figures by not using Ferrari parts. There are really good aftermarket manganese bronze valve guide sets that will last as long as sintered steel. Here is a machine shop that can do the job well, used by some of our pros. They know the best sources for valves, guides, etc.

Thanks for posting Terry. I know most don't like the "wait and see" part but really that's sometimes how it needs to be approached.

I hear what you are saying but without knowing your guides are good or bad, purchasing a vehicle that has not had the guides replaced is really buying a liability. Maybe you won't have it, but good idea to factor it into your ownership costs.

Love the paintings on the wall, especially if they are originals. Looks like at least a couple from Jim Dietz.

I didn't see that price on the web ad but agree no chance for that kind of money. Nice unique interior but ......

Also, heated front seats? Really? Finally an option(?) I don't have and sure as heck wish I did. I didn't think they were available on the 456s.

And on the other side of the universe Carriage House is "currently asking" (their words) $119,500.00 for the 1995 456GT they have.

Yes and 129k for the Tommy H. Too much in my opinion. I think the 64 by park place is more like it.

129k for the M GT (2002) is at least within the bounds of reason. At least there have been some 456M GT's sold at or near that figure. But 119k for the model year '95 (when the 456 was only available with stick)? Definitely too much

I had mine replaced with steel at 30K miles. The engine mounts were shot by then too. It's good to have that off your mind.
