Great post! Completely agree with u on the Mac's suspension. It puts many luxury sedans to shame in that dept. If OP's priority is DD, then the Mac is hands down the best choice! I will take the 650S as I prefer its looks better, and I understand they sorted out the vague handling feel in the 650S.

The best way to describe the difference in philosophy between the Ferrari and the McLaren is this: Ferrari wants to maximise your control while driving fast, the McLaren wants to maximise your speed while staying in control. It's a subtle but important difference. What I can say, and in my view something that is not a matter of opinion, is that the way the McLaren goes about its stuff does make it a better and more usable all-rounder. The suspension is borderline voodoo - very comfortable, yet the car corners flat even in the softest mode and when in race mode it is electric! Despite the hydraulic suspension, open diff, brake steer, air brake and active aero, this is a car that still feels very intuitive to drive fast. You don't think too much about the systems, you start to feel how they respond and work them automatically into the way you drive. It is exciting too. Some say that you are not the one driving the car but that's nonsense really. You can go faster than you would ever believe and all the while the car is shouting "come on, more, more". It is exhilarating in the right hands.

I don't do track driving with my own cars (so far) but do long road trips to Europe at, shall we say, decent speed. The Alps and that sort of thing. I'm told that the McLaren will understeerer on track compared to the Speciale and I can believe that, however, on the road with mere P Zeros as fitted to my car, no sign of it at all.

One caveat I will add is that my car is a Spider and I wouldn't have a coupe. There are no stiffness demerits to the Spider because of McLaren's carbon tub - if you like open air motoring and brilliant driving, the carbon tub makes the McLaren hard to beat as a package. This also helps with the sound, although with the sports exhaust (my car is fitted with it) and either the rear window or the roof lowered, there are no complaints from me about the sound. True it is gruff and angry and it roars rather than screeches but I'm ok with that. For reference my other cars have included the 12 cylinder Aston DBS, a Capristo equipped 430 and a CS, so you'll have to forgive me believing I do know what good sound is. The McLaren's sound and exhaust is an entertaining partner on a fast drive with pops and bangs everywhere and a good level of volume and easily enough anger to make you feel you're in something special. It is not sweet, it is mean.

As for the turbo power delivery, it is clearly a 'feature' of the car, as it will be for 488 and other modern supercars. I do prefer n/a but that does not invalidate turbos. You'll have to forgive me but saying "don't like turbos except for F40" smacks of hearing things other people have said and allowing that to form your view. No bother, I have been there and happen to love the F40 too, though have never driven one. Followed one across Ireland once in my CS though. It is an awesome car.

The point is, when everyone says "drive them and make up your own mind", guess what? They're right. At least, it's fine to listen to opinion and discuss this stuff, but let that give you perspective and then before making a decision drive the cars. You learn that journalists are affected by mood to some degree and more importantly, they judge by what they feel is important and for their own driving ability and preferences and they are different to yours. It is NOT obvious that a 10/10 car is better for you than an 8/10 car. Try them.

Anyhow, the turbo. 12C has very little turbo lag above 3k rpm and below that you rarely need instant response anyway. (Stelvio pass is one place I discovered it does make a difference!). And the payback? Well, it's obvious isn't it? The McLaren is QUICK. Very very quick. I have chased F12s, Aventadors, Speciales etc. all over Europe and vice versa with a group of like minded mates. The McLaren is most likely the fastest point to point of all of them, just. The 650 would likely be quicker still. The bit I don't know is how we all compare as drivers - I think they have a big respect for my abilities. I think it's the car but am happy to let them think on!

It would be a mistake to discount the McLaren unless you don't like the looks or don't feel like the brand suits you. As for driving and the car itself it is completely brilliant, unique and worth an hour of anyone's time in my view.

How difficult is ingress and egress for us generation Xers? I had to pad my garage wall because of how wide the door of my Spider swings. I understand the 570s and 540c rectify this issue of door sill girth. Amazing torsional rigidity with CF tub in Spider. To deny it would be ignorant.

Two things I want to know--
1) how it is to maintain compared to Lambo/Ferrari

2) and I personally respect the opinion of Tiff Needell more than any other journalist, when he tested the 12C for the first time, it lost the torque when he needed it while he was drifting and car fish-tailed and went off! Has that kind of issue been solved by McLaren?

If you have the space once, you always have it. That's actually the nice part. If you know that pulling into your garage a certain way worked the first time, then you can just throw the doors open all the way without even thinking about it since 100% ajar is far less than conventional doors.

As for getting in and out, well, obviously it's not as easy due to the width/height of the tub, but I don't think that would be the dealbreaker given that is only a few second of actual usage. If you can get in a Ferrari easily at 60, you can get in a McLaren. If you can't get in and out a McLaren, I'm guessing getting out of Ferrari isn't exactly second nature either. I'd say ride height is more of an issue than the door sills, and that goes for all exotics.

I'll keep my McLaren answer short. Buddy of mine bought 12c and then dealer suckered him into 650s. Both had nothing but issues with them (internal wiring, engine, door not closing, constantly in the shop, etc). The one cool thing are the doors--that's about it. The Iris info system is a complete joke. Car is a constant work in progress (maybe the baby car 570 has some of this fixed).

I won't mention depreciation since that is NOT a concern (he only lost $110k in 6 months). Go to the Mac forum and you will see them bashing the brand they own. They are all up in arms on the McLaren business model and how they keep undercutting pricing with cheaper units (oh 570 and 540 just out under $200k).

Heck if you're even thinking about McLaren talk to a former owner first.

You need to visit the ML site - they sure love to hate!

Easy to understand when you read how some early adopters feel shafted - can't personally blame McLaren as they have to keep improving their products. Have to say, the 540/570 cars will get a lot of new customers at the price/performance point - including many who would have bought a new/used 650S. Cars are in the same performance sphere, 540/570 look better and save a fortune.

Got a detailed PM from another fchat owner today and it appears we may have a troll on our hands fellas. Lots of claims on several forums about different cars he's owned contradicted by other posts. Even in this thread he talks about owning his GT3 for 4 months but a post from mid January 2015 on another thread he says how he has heard the gt3 is great. This was all apparently exposed on a Lamborghini forum. Anyway just an FYI.

No Man! I believe people buy 3-4 cars per year. My dad's client and his close friend who owns a dealership for luxury cars in Dubai once told me about an Arab who bought 599 GTO, 458, California,F355 & Gallardo all at same day back in 2011 for his daughter's wedding.

Not bashing, I think the Lambo is a great car - just believe the Speciale is that much better. As to the Speciale not being a daily driver, where in the world did you get that information? Mine has the leather interior option and with the new carbon fiber mats is as pretty or prettier inside than the Lambo. Bluetooth sound system, navigation, auto mode for the ladies (not being sexist, thats just what my wife prefers) and VERY roadable at ANY speed/traffic situation. For those that say its just a track car, well, they are just dead wrong.

Clearly you have access to a Huracan but it doesn't mean it's yours. Maybe it's your parents or maybe you work in a shop that installs gear into exotics? I don't really care. I was just passing along a PM I got which is why included the message. The inconsistencies are clear. Do you mind listing the 30 or so exotics that you have personally owned in the last ten years. The only guy I know that has spent $7.5 million dollars in cars in the last few years just took delivery on his LaFerrari. You must run in similar circles?

The one thing I have learned on car forums is you can never please everyone and there are always the jealous haters. However, the majority are true car enthusiasts that get along. I have made some great life long friends on these forums and we enjoy getting together all of the time. You should try it sometime.

If you don't believe me (and quit listening to jealous ladies PM'ing you) that is certainly not my issue.

I have done more (wasting my time--taking pics for you date and time stamped) to appease your little internet ranting. If you want to pay me $400/hr (my going rate billing rate), I'd be happy to get together with you.

Not bashing, I think the Lambo is a great car - just believe the Speciale is that much better. As to the Speciale not being a daily driver, where in the world did you get that information? Mine has the leather interior option and with the new carbon fiber mats is as pretty or prettier inside than the Lambo. Bluetooth sound system, navigation, auto mode for the ladies (not being sexist, thats just what my wife prefers) and VERY roadable at ANY speed/traffic situation. For those that say its just a track car, well, they are just dead wrong.

Looked up the dealers on the CLaren website for the U.S. 15. None in Colorado.

Hard to have a daily driver when the closest service is 17 hours away. Don't care if they will pick up and deliver. How many days are you going to be without your car for service? And yes, McL do break.

Hence, I have only seen 4 McLs here. Three were shipped out from Miami. Talked to the owners who wanted to drive them in the mountains. The fourth I have seen one time. My guess is someone from California or Texas. And he was a geezer like me.

McL would not work as a dad for me.

We do have a Lambo dealer and an Fcar dealer. The Lambo dealer has not been in Colorado very long. Will they make it? That's a risk.

Each market is different. Pick you did super car on more than just the car itself.
