Ferrari as a brand has advanced rapidly for the past 10 years being much more solid than ever in terms of reliabilty, technology and comfort, not to mention lowering maintenance costs dramatically from one model to another.
with all that being said, and Ferrari's latest 7-Year Maintenance Plan, i was wondering what kind of impact that had on owners yearly mileage...
Are owners driving their cars much more than they used to 10 years ago or are they still considered garage queens?

Don't know about others but I've taken her around the corners quite a bit: Just above 13,000 kms since delivery in march 2012 (she's is in hiatus because of the weather right now).

No probs up to now (knock on wood) except for known electronic gremlins twice which disappeared after a restart.

My motto: Use it, but don't break it. ;)

They are still garage queens. The major contributing factor is that ferrari owners also generally own a few other vehicles and as such hesitate to take the ferrari out daily. The story would be different if one owned a ferrari and just one other vehicle, that being an ordinary and preferably beat up sedan/suv for times it is totally impractical to take the 458. Then the the F cars would be driven more.

The annual maintenance plan really has no impact. You need to do a yearly whether you use the car or not. It only saves about $1000 a year as the routine maintenance on the CA and 458 is really low -- about half of an F430 over 4 years.

The maintenance plan does not cover brakes, which would be the highest cost wearing parts of the car over a long period of time.

I keep my 458 spider in Australia where I spend about 40% of my time - even given that I expect to do about 10,000km/year. I love to drive it - so I do. I don't understand the weekend car mentality at all - but that's just me - each to their own.

owning a new [high production] car as a garage queen is about the dumbest thing you can do. You're just making money for the next guy.

I drive mine about 5k/season, well under the warranty mileage so it makes no difference to me.

I wouldn't call it a "High Production" car but i totally agree that your saving all the fun and cash for the next owner.

In the US, yes. In Europe, no.

I've driven mine a little under average for Europe, I would say. 6,000 miles in the first year. Less than I wanted to do.

Not a 458 owner here, but I collected my '12 California 1 year ago this coming Wednesday. I will turn 6000 miles as I drive her to meet the truck to take her for the 1 year service next week.

I drive mine a lot, have had three or four road trips with it (200-300 miles round trip) and nearly daily when weather is nice.

I expect I will have slightly less miles in the coming year, as we are moving to our new house in a month or so, and it is only 4-5 miles to my office one way vs 16-17 miles one way with my current house.

I am planning on driving her, enjoying her, and having a BLAST!

Supposedly, my order slot for the 458 Spider is coming up soon. I am not sure what I will do, but if I do "upgrade" I will drive her to.

My daily's have been a Cayenne Turbo and, now, a Panamera GTS.

Mileage is completely region specific. Even with the extremely cheap gasoline + insurance in the US, there are very few places to fully utilize these cars on the street. Speed limits were set based on vehicles 40 years ago + and are now mostly used to extort drivers in order to support bloated police, judicial and bankrupt municipalities.

American Ferrari ownership consists of dressing up like a bright red clown to lounge around oversized mall parking lots staring at box stores and discussing vehicle depreciation rates. Complaining about the apparent lack of cup holders to accomodate the 1 gallon coffee mugs and NFL/NHL/NBA games are the topics. Total car useage per event 15 miles. Repeating this process about 80 times a year gives the car its annual useage.

In Europe even with 100-300% higher gas prices, owners tend to realize life is too short to worry about depreciation and generally do not take imposed speed limits seriously. Since prices are generally higher, Europeans expect maximum value and useage from their purchases. Events tend to be high speed highway runs, runs through twisty roads and visiting beutiful scenery. Total car useage per event 100miles+.

Thanks for posting this. Sorry to agree but I guess, there is quite some truth to it.

I can of course only speak for myself, but I really enjoy USING this kind of cars. It was the case with my previous 996 and 997 Turbos and it's once again with my current 458 Italia.

These cars are MEANT to be used in the most beautiful surroundings and put a FAT smile on your face driving them to build a great memory - that's what they were made for !

Have a look at the video my mate took from his 430 Scud when we (I was behind him so my plate wouldn't be spotted) were driving through Austria, in this case the Grossglockner-mountain, last year and you just MAY get the point:

Isn't this just beautiful ? Way better than "Cars & Coffee"... ;)

    Best,

As most everyone on this forum knows, Europeans are much more evolved than Americans. They are better drivers, have a better sense of values, and they know it. Thanks for fully illustrating this point to the ignorant. Too bad they bathe only once a week and their dentition is deplorable.

But Americans have better genes and food (McD, BK, KFC, etc.). ;)

BTW, my wife likes my taking a bath only once a week.
Makes the animal in her come out. Wouldn't wanna stop THAT ! :D

Peaceful cheers to that big continent in the west,
    Ulli
