I thought the code was provided to the owners of the cars upon delivery. Ferrari USA has just told me that the codes are keep at the factory only and not provided to the owners. I explained that in the owners manual it states a proceedure for using the PIN. He said you need to contact Ferrari USA when you have a situation where you are stranded. He further stated that this is for security.

So, my question is, as owners do you have your PIN code and was it provided to you when you purchased the car? I'm also very interested in new cars as maybe this is a change of policy?

Well, I have bad news. If your fob breaks and you don't have the pin code, it'll cost you THOUSANDS to replace the key fobs and associated ecu. Very stupid planning on Ferrari's part.

The number is or at least was provided in a sealed privacy envelope. They are now evidently providing the original PIN with replacement sets of remotes so that the immobilizer unit may be reprogrammed to accept the new remotes for those owners that lost the PIN.

I suspect the person you spoke to was misinformed. The entire reason for a PIN was to give you the ability to drive the car if a remote was lost or disabled when you were away from home.

Stupid? They are on the recieving end.

I have heard no hue and cry on the part of new car buyers to provide cars without the security system so Ferrari has no downside to continue to play the game the same as they have since 96.

Brian, we just went through this issue with Algar. It seems that Ferrari will not supply the original PIN to owners-- the new fob/ reprogramming kit is the only solution (thousands). With a Pin #, key fobs may be ordered w/out anything else (quoted 700-800... how nice of Ferrari)

Well, assuming a non-cynical Ferrari, that would have been a stupid move.

The majority of their market area experiences a very high incidence of high end auto theft. The security system is welcome there.

Again, if the majority of new car buyers complained something might happen but Ferrari really doesnt care what a 2nd owner of a 6 year old car thinks.

I never said I didn't think Ferraris should come with alarm systems.

I was saying exactly what you meant in your last sentence.

What I'm trying to find out is if new owners are being supplied with the pin. Or if you purchased a used car, was the pin in the documentation you received.

It looks like this and came in a business sized envelope with a FNA letterhead.

If you look at the PDI check list at the front of the service book I think there is a check box for that item.
The envelopes said "Only to be opened by the purchaser". Ferrari in about 01 or 02 told us to go ahead and open them and keep a record of the nunber because so many owners did not and they were getting tired of the incessant phone calls for help. I opened every one on every PDI I did and wrote the number down. I do it now with current customes cars and keep a file of them for those phone calls.

It is one of many reasons I refer to them as the top secret document in the glove box. I know for a fact that less that 10% of the owners ever look at their books and familiarize themselves with the car or they would know that document is there.

In this country I personally would welcome it. High end car theft especially exotics is very low.

As for the other, Ferrari used to give it out with proof the info was for the owner but it has just become another area where they can make a buck.

One of many reasons I am so adamant about people getting a PPI. Most prospective buyers have no idea what should come with the car, how important it is, and how expensive to replace. They really need someone to gide them through it all.

    Thank you.

FerrariNA is saying they have not provided these cards for years.

How do they define years? I have had them in my hand for 430's.

I don' know what to say. He was very derogatory regarding misinformation on Fchat. Said they haven't provided the PIN code cards for "many years, if at all" because they work closely with thr FBI and are concerned about insurance and security.

It just seemed a bit illogical since:

    1. The method to use the PIN is in the 355 manual
    2. People have told me they have these PIN cards
    3. Owners can prove who they are via the dealer network.

I would like to see some more examples of these cards to show him they are still provided. Of course blank out the vin and code.

As I said before, why would there even be a PIN if not for owner use? Its primary function is to start the car when the remote dies.

Typical FNA crap. Rewriting history because they dont feel like opening a file drawer and looking at your cars file.

Now you can begin to see why I got away from them.

Oh...And don't ever mention this place to them.

THE only source of anything Ferrari IS Ferrari.

Yea as long as you don't mind being lied to.

What I found most interesting was his comment that if I'm stranded, and only if stranded, I can call him with a police officer to verify that I'm the owner. In my mind I was thinking I better get stranded M-F between the hours the factory is open and Ferrari NA is open. That leaves me, what, a two hour window if I'm lucky?

I'm glad my bank trusts me with my PIN code.

These are from the latest car I have here right now. It is from a Fiorano. Yuo can see that the privacy envelope says Stati Uniti indicating it is a US car and in one shot the envelope clearly shows a FNA return address.

THEY put these in the car.

THEY have these numbers on file

THEY are not being completly forthcoming.

I can assure you I have opened these envelopes for far more recent cars than 355's.

I did find the PIN in my documentation, in an unopened envelope. ('99 355)

But as I was told, having the PIN code without the red key fob is pretty much useless. So I'll ask again, can we in fact program new remotes with the PIN??

As I understand it you can NOT program remotes, you can only re-program the alarm ECU to match new remotes.

I don't believe the remotes are programmable wirelessly.

Rifledriver, correct me if I'm wrong
