Hi Guys, Forgive me if my question is naive. I am thinking about renting a Ferrari for couple of weeks and doing a drive through Europe. I will be doing it with a friend she is in a wheelchair do you think it will be possible to do it? Since we will need space for her wheelchair is there a specific model i should look for? Thanks
I know the mid-engine cars won't work. I don't have any experience with the front engine cars, so not sure there. Good luck, and hope you find a fun car that works for you.
Thank you everyone for such quick response i will explore the options suggested. The FF was the first one to come into my mind but I don't really like the backside of FF but again it is good option. She is very active person and her wheelchair looks something like this not very big but since it will be a tour so we will have luggage too. Any model suggestions from 90's? I like the look of 90's Ferrari and any links to hiring them in Europe because of them offer the latest models and my guess is it would also be little cheaper to hire them. Thank you guys for the quick response. I will look into the suggestions put forward by the members. The first option that came to my mind was FF but to me it is beautiful but not the Ferrari I like its just a personal opinion,I prefer Ferrari's from 90's. Does anyone know of a company or way to hire those Ferrari's? since all the luxury car hire offer latest models and I guess the older ones would be also light on pocket. My friend is a very active person and uses a wheelchair which looks like this so its not very big but since its a tour we will have luggage also. Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you can get a hold of a MONDIAL CABRIOLET, it would do the trick. The rear seats fold flat and you can just drop the wheelchair in with ease. There is no other Ferrari of the era you prefer that can do the trick with ease. Even with the wheel chair in place, you would still have a small trunk in back to store your stuff. BTW, I owned a Mondial. They are a blast. I would have loved nothing more than to take mine across Europe. If you can track one down, it will be trip neither of you will soon forget. IMO the easiest would be a soft top spyder with rear seats like a mondial. A great touring GT is a Fiat Dino Spyder which has rear seats, a large trunk and a Ferrari engine but renting one might be hard. A folding wheel chair would fit in back of either. They do look a lot better than an FF. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I doubt the 458 430 will work. Yes the FF would do the job. But doubt the F12 has enough space. The Cali might. Open the top and put folded wheelchair in the rear seat area. Now put luggage in the trunk and spare cabin space. Now decide if you want the top up or down. I doubt the folded wheelchair will fit in the trunk.
I think this is probably the best idea and I bet you can rent one. Renting a Mondial or a Fiat Dino Spyder would be hard.
Maybe strap a folded wheelchair on top of a roof rack mounted on a Ferrari coupe? http://www.handiworld.com/17-handirack-will-It-fit-my-car I assume you'd place the wheelchair on its side when on top of the roof. You might want to make a custom padded nylon bag to put the folded wheelchair inside of in order to protect the Ferrari's paint job on the roof. . Image Unavailable, Please Login
Does that fold flat? If the diameter of the wheels is less than 25" that would probably fit in the trunk of a 348 or 355 folded up with a bunch of room left. The opening is 25"x28". I fit a cooler, 2 helmets, a full backpack and some other miscellaneous stuff in mine when I go to auto crosses along with the factory toolkit - the huge one with the big can of agip fix-o-flat. The most surprising thing about my 355 when I got it was the amount of room in the trunk. Ingress and egress may be tough, though.
I think the Cali idea is really cool but the best one is MONDIAL CABRIOLET one because I really love the shape of the car because I was born in 80's so grew up admiring those. The Dino looks very cool as well. The idea of something like roof rack would spoil it for me, roof race is like sneakers with a Savile row suit but that is my personal opinion The wheelchair wont go flat because there are two types of wheelchair one folding the folding chairs are heavy and not really for very active users and the others are rigid frame they are very light strong design and are for very active users she uses a rigid chair I am attaching a picture of how wheelchair looks like when it is ready to be put away. Do you have any idea where can I look for MONDIAL CABRIOLET on rent or do you think buying one and use it for couple of weeks and sell it would be cheaper option? Need to remember that the Mondial Cabriolet is a 30 year old car. When, not if, it breaks sourcing parts and skilled hands to fix might be very expensive and time consuming. You can browse through the Mondial thread section and read some of the service threads to get an idea of things. Getting a more travel friendly wheelchair that folds might be an easier way than finding the right Ferrari to fit the wheelchair.
A local FChatter who uses a walker drives his Cali daily, folding and placing the walker into the passenger seat by himself, very ably, with the top up. He has always enjoyed performance cars, and worked around his situation to accommodate this on his own terms. From your post, I take it that you will be along for the ride, and can stow the chair if she can't without your assistance. Rent a Cali, or similar, and enjoy the trip.
I'd worry more about the size of the frame. That'd be the showstopper in something like a Fiat Spider boot (too shallow) - probably Fiat Dino as well, and also many of the +2 rear "seats".
the couple (man and woman in the wheelchair) arrived by 458 at the FOD at Spa. I was surprised the wheelchair fitted the trunk of the car, but it did. best Jurgen Image Unavailable, Please Login
You will need a very compact wheel chair! My wife , being the sweetheart she is, presented me with this walker during a surprise party. Needless to say we had to leave it because none of the cars present would accommodate the walker including a Cali, Scud, 360, 599, TR, 308... we had close to twenty cars and none of them would fit the walker, we tried trunks, behind the seats... no dice. I was left behind to be picked up later. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you all for your replies. bobzdar: The diameter of wheels is 24 inches. Enzo360: WOW that's very encouraging do you have more info on them or pics?If its possible to contact them I can have more details on wheelchairs which can be used etc.It would be of great help Stackhouse: The walkers are different game altogether i think but thanks for chiming in much appreciated. Cheers!
Side note: That Rosso Dino Scuderia is a perfect car, easily one of my favorite Ferraris. Owner is a very nice guy.
Can't go wrong with a Mondial 3.2 or a t Cabriolet ! Plenty reliable and plenty of storage for a wheelchair and luggages ! Here is mine, but sorry she's not for hire and she resides in America only. All the best! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Take a look at this revived thread. The OP stores the frame of his wheelchair in the trunk of his 355. All the best for your trip. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64112&page=5
