I'll make one guess at this one - Luigi Chinetti.
We have a winner. Welcome to the board. Gerald - 4 points NNO - 3 points Wayne - 3 points vur - 2 points Miltonian - 2 points Darkhorse575 - 1 point Pranucci - 1 point FarmerDave - 1 point ferrariartist - 1 point BlackRX7Turbo - 1 point iceburns288 - 1 point Round 21...During his funeral his coffin was paraded through out the city on top of his Ferrari. Who was he and what year did he pass away?
It was Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips; died 1961... The car on top of which his coffin was placed was a Series II 250 GT PF Cabriolet (not a Spyder California, as is often misconceived)... von Trips died in the 1961 Italian Grand Prix (and killed 14 people in the process)... The serial number of the 250 GT PF Cab that paraded his coffin is 2361 GT (License Plate 64497 MO)... HUGE thanks to my boss, Gerald Roush, for this information... It really doesn't get any more correct and complete than that...
Before the aforementioned race, Phil Hill insisted that the mechanics fix his engine... The mechanics insisted there was nothing wrong... The other two Ferraris crashed and Hill went on to win the race...
The six pallbearers for von Trips were: Richie Ginther, Phil Hill, Joakim Bonnier, Hans Herrmann, Edgar Barth and Gunther Thiel...
Actually, Phil insisted that the engine in his car be changed. There were five Ferraris in the race. Von Trips crashed, Ginther, Baghetti and Rodriguez went out with engine problems. Hill became World Champion as a result.
LOL, it's just him, I swear...! He knew most of it off the top of his head - I just typed while he dictated the info...!
Gerald just told me that while the Ferrari proceeded to the church in the rain, the band played Chopin's Marche funebre.
As per Gerald, from Brock Yates' Enzo Ferrari The Man, The Cars, The Races: "Once again the press was at full cry, as was the Vaitcan. Ferrari fled for cover, feigning grief over his fallen driver. Legend has it that Ferrari liked Trips more than Hill, and that is perhaps the case, but his affection was at best measured in tiny degrees. In fact, he cared little, if at all for the men who drove his cars. A case in point. Shortly after poor von Trips was laid to rest at the family castle (his casket hauled to his grave by a badly overheating Ferrari GT) Ferrari mused to a priest with whom he maintained a close friendship, "I think I did a good job faking my sadness for the death of von Trips."
While we're waiting for the next official question, how about a "while we wait" question...? Adalgisa Bisbini - Enzo Ferrari's mother - how did she die...?
LOL, you're absolutely correct... Next "while we wait" question: What is the serial number of the car on the cover of the book pictured below...? Image Unavailable, Please Login
S/N 12819 (a conversion spyder) i gotta admit, this is from your "fact of the day" on your FML site... remembered it because i have this (wonderful) book. Great job on it Mr. Roush if i may add... one of most often read F-books in my library... GT ps does 2 unofficial points equal one official point?
Awesome... Just when I thought no one looked at the FOTD, you reassure me... You'll have to speak with Walter about unofficial points... Until then, why not turn the hat trick with this question: How much wider is an Enzo rear end than a Testarossa rear end...?
gosh! well let me take my Canadian Tire measuring tape to the garage and check, shall we? suprise, suprise... they arent there, and a Pontiac aint gonna cut it... lets try plan B: OK... assuming that the rear is the widest point on the car, and using Road & Track's data panels AND some Grade 2 Math... ok... a calculator.... Enzo width 80.1 inches TR width 77.6 inches therefore an Enzo's rear is 2.5 inches wider than a TR. But J-Lo has them both beat i think... GT
Right answer...!!! I have the Testarossa as having a 77.8 inch rear end, but I suppose either of our sources could be off by two tenths of an inch...
77.6...77.8 that figures... i'm sure if you actually went out measured a dozen TRs you'd come up with a variety of answers... handmade cars indeed... i heard that a replacement panel, when ordered from the factory, comes with "extra" metal around the edges - instead of being cut to the exact size - to accomodate minor differences between cars. Is that true? GT
I can't say I've ever heard that before, but it certainly doesn't surprise me... Maybe someone else can chime in; maybe someone who's ordered a replacement panel perhaps...
Very impressive answer. So does the point go to you or Gerald? Gerald - 4 points NNO - 3 points Wayne - 3 points vur - 2 points Miltonian - 2 points Darkhorse575 - 1 point Pranucci - 1 point FarmerDave - 1 point ferrariartist - 1 point BlackRX7Turbo - 1 point iceburns288 - 1 point Round 22...After several accidents and deaths happened in the 1950's racing scene, what did the Italian press label Enzo?
