So from a business perspective it would be a better idea to say from the start what their 5 year plan is for ther car? I believe the quote is "no development as yet", which tells me that their 458 r&d is working on the spider as a priority, and the "scud" will follow.
Ofcourse there will NOT be a 458 Scud. There WILL be a 'special' 458, but it won't be called 'Scud' - I doubt anyone in Ferrari knows the name yet, because at this stage it will just be a code number on a long long product launch schedule.
The sport version of the 458 Italia is likely to be faster than the Enzo and the Scud. Ferrari's next generation Enzo replacement may be released around the same time, so Ferrari probably wants to be careful about how it markets and positions these two new cars.
I don't understand the habitual knee-jerk panic and taking liberties with press releases to not mean anything else is coming down the pipeline. By now one can clearly see the trend in that special limited edition model variants are nearly always created. Look at how they are milking the 599GTB and the F430. And they did it with the 550 and 575, 360, etc.... are memories that short? The 458 is now Ferrari's poster child for cutting edge. They will milk it far. It's all part and parcel to Ferrari's marketing machine.
They will build something after the new challenge car comes out. They said the same thing about the california when there was shots of a prototype driving around.
I was in Maranello a few days ago and was told there is a chance the "special" version of the 458 will be a twin turbo setup adding 110hp to the current model. My insider source is strong, please don't ask, I won't reveal him/her. This is not for sure, only a "possibility" But in our conversation, the F40 triple pipe came up during TT talks.
