April 18-20 will be the Ferrari Challenge at Road Atlanta with the Shell Historics. http://www.ferrarichallenge.com/ How long has it been since the Challenge was at RA?
Was that the one where the guy ended up hitting the wall in front of the pit? I was there for that one. He was ok just broke a few ribs and no major injury.
I got engaged at the end of that race. Down by the turns 5/6. It was May 15th 2004. I should know that date but I had to check the ticket stub. Hopefully my wife stays off F-chat or I'm in trouble.
There hasn't been a track day at Road Atl. in a long time. I had been on the track for 3 different occasions. One time I took a drivers course there. I'm glad I did. What a fun track. Too bad it has all those concrete walls so close to the track.
If you join the SCCA, besides getting the local newsletter and a national newsletter (as good as Grassroots Motorsports) for the measley annual sum of around $120 (local and national dues) you have the opportunity to participate in the "PDX" (Performance Driving Expeience) program. Between races (usally between the morning and afternoon sessions), they open the track. The entrants are divided into 3 groups depending on experience. The first two groups have a driver sit with them, the more experienced go solo. All log book dependant and instructor sign offs. Two sessions per event of 20 minutes each. BALLS OUT!!! no speed restrictions. Great fun! AND educational. The instructors are very experienced SCCA drivers and full safety workers monitor the event. Cost per day is a bargain at only $100. Did it twice last year, so yes, there IS track time at Road Atlanta, maybe not a day, but after a couple of all out 20 minute sessions....just as much adrenaline JD
FCA tracked with them the last time the Challenge was there in 04. It was the last time I have driven RA
I am working with the dealership and looking for other sponsors as well so we can put together an FCA track event to go with this...
This event is being run by Ferrari of NA and will be an invitation type event. There will be a group of FCA members that will also get invites. FNA is NOT setting up "public" track sessions anymore, so The FCA will try to set up some track sessions in between other events. If it works out we will send out entry forms and cost info to all FCA members within 200 miles.
wait a second. are you saying that the general public isn't allowed to come and enjoy the races and it's by invite only? or is anybody still allowed to come...
okay that's what i am trying to clarify. i know there had been speculation as to that before in the past i think. hope it's available for everybody!
Thats what I thought too when I saw the email. I wouldnt mind watching a F challenge event here at R/A. I used to attend them in CA back in the 90's but I do not remember them being restricted to only FCA members. if non FCA members are not welcome then thats fine. Brian
OOPS--sorry for the confusion--- The event is open to the public, BUT----- The ontrack runs for Ferrari owners is NOT. At this time there will be NO ontrack runs and the event will just be a spectator thing. I (with others) will be working to see ( begging) if we can get some track time each day allocated to the FCA and if successful, we will let everyone know. Be prepared to pay $$$ though as I think the event itself will likely be 150 ish and the tracktime if available will be an additional fee... If I'm not mistaken, last time they tried selling tickets thru Ticketmaster....
$150 just to spectate? That is MUCH more than it was in 2004! If they do that no one will show up.....
In 2004 it was like $25 for weekend spectators.. I seriously doubt it would be $150. Hell. you can attend the 12Hrs of Sebring for the entire weekend for $90. Somebody has been smoking something strange or their head is as big as a hot air balloon !!!
I can't remember what I paid in 04 and I was ran the track AND ate with them (usually separate fees for each). Anyone have an old FCA newsletter from back then? I bet it will have the fees in an announcement.
