Ferrari Challenge weekend at Road America

Enzo, F430 Challenge, 360 Challenge will be there for sure of course.

 

-a, you drive like an old woman, why would any self respecting Fdealer put you into a 430 C?

 

I will be up there this Sunday for the Ferrari days and the following Sunday for the BRIC as well. Can't wait!

There was at least one Enzo doing hot laps last year when I went. It didn't race, but it did get on the track.

Ive got some pictures. Forgot to grab some pics of the group of 308s. Really loved the one with the wide rear arches and deep rear wheels. Somewhat disappointed in that no Super Ferraris showed.

Got back today after attending Saturday and Sunday. The 360's and F430's definately represented, however I was alittle disappointed in the F40, F50, Enzo turn out, as there were none. All in all it was a fun time and I would go again. I might have a few pics to host up as well.

 

I was there on Fri Sat and Sunday and was disappointed at the turn out. The vintage cars were only a handfull and hardly any Ferrari road cars. The Porsche club events have 5x's as many cars at their RA events.

 

The Ferrari Challenge event is essentially just a track event for dealer supported Challenge cars, with little concern for spectator entertainment except for the 'thrill' of watching the cars lap the track in a 'race type' setting. You have to go to a Historic Challenge event to see historic cars lap the track. As for road cars, this is the wrong event for spectating them as it is a track event. I have never been to BRIC, but expect that would be a better choice if you want to see historic road cars. That or something like Monterey show, or Oak Street in Chicago, etc. I would suggest you check out the Ferrari Club of America for road/track events, rather than Ferrari N.A. events. Where are you going to see more RED cars than that??

 

It was a Ferrari Historic Challenge event. Only 5 drum brake cars and 9 disc brake cars. I was quite dissapointed in the historic turnout. I had been in years past and I remember much more historic Ferrari's.

I would agree the BRIC is much better for viewing historic cars.

So anyone know who the one was that piled the 360 into T1 at RA? I am up here with the PCA running the 348 (As someone pointed out much better run groups in my own opinion). Today I saw them haul it in on a tow truck and it was pretty beat up. I honestly havent seen anything worse until today when we had 11 cars go home on tow trucks including a Carrera GT that a guy looped out at T14 chasing a GT3 and backed it into the tire wall on the inside of the turn.

Anyway talking with the corner crew they said the Ferrari guys had an active weekend. Was just curious what you all saw. If you in the area I am up at the track tomorrow and the only Ferrari here stop by and say hi.

 

As a fellow fan, I understand your disappointment. However, please bear in mind that those who race historic Ferraris are the few, the proud, the truly demented.

Think about it. You have a car that is worth $1MM to $10MM dollars. The plan is for you to take it to the track and race on skinny tires for a trophy worth, maybe, $250. I know guys who will not take their brand-new Ferrari to a track day because they don't want to "hurt" the value of their car. (I also know guys who, unbelievably, will reduce their valuation of a car if it has been tracked.)

And, make no mistake about it. These guys and gals are racing. I watched as a 250 GTO was towed off the track at Mt. Tremblant.

So next time you go to one of these events, go around and thank each one of the owners for bringing their cars out. Remember, they could be like some of their contemporaries and lock their cars up in a tree museum.

Well said. As a minor correction, there were 11, not nine disc brake cars, including three GTOs (how often do you have a chance to see this?), two Comp 250 SWBs, a pair of 512 Ms including the ex-Penske Sunoco car, a 512 BB/LM, etc. And confirming your point, one of the SWBs blew its engine rather comprehensively. There were a couple more drum brake cars, including a Maserati 300S which broke a rocker in first practice on Friday.

For those who have the chance to attend, the final 2006 Shell Historic race at Lime Rock (July 21-22), has 32 cars confirmed at this point, including six GTOs (and a seventh possible).

There were quite a few great cars at the Le Mans Classic and The Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend and many of them were being pedaled quite nicely.

You may want to consider heading over next year to one of those events. Both are something you'll not soon forget. 0846,0854,002C, J6, and P 4/5 have all invited and it's likely I may head over with one or more of them.

There are also interesting auctions that take place at both events. At The Classic LeMans auction I was lucky enough to buy lots 20 and 21 which included a complete set of scrutinising documents on every car that raced at Le Mans in 66 and 67 including 0846, 0854, and J6. The documents are VERY interesting confirm many things I've posited for years.
