Mom Says 'Ordinary' Beijing 21-Year-Old Son Made Cash from Pool, Stocks to Buy Lamborghini He Crashed

    Apr 14, 2015 2:00 pm

The mother of the Lamborghini driver involved in a crash on Saturday night says that her son is "just an ordinary kid" without business or political connections who paid for the estimated RMB 4 million car himself.

The mother, Mrs. Li, told the Beijing News her 21-year-old son made money competing in pool tournaments from age 14 and invested his winnings in the stock market, which allowed him to afford the car. Lamborghinis in China cost about RMB 4.3 million RMB, or approximately USD 700,000.

She also denied that her son was in a car race and attributed the crash to "wet weather." Nevertheless, the police didn't buy her account. The investigation shows that both cars were going at at least 160kmh (100mph) in the tunnel at the time of the crash. According to the Beijing Public Security Bureau's official Weibo account, both drivers have been detained, suspected of illegal car racing. An unidentified woman was a passenger in the Lamborghini, and she was the only person reported to have been hurt. News reports say she was treated at a local hospital for unspecified minor injuries.

A car equipped with a dashboard camera traveling in the opposite direction recorded the events just before the crash, showing the green Lamborghini traveling in reverse, against traffic, with the Ferrari chasing it head to head.

The video also showed that least four other sports cars were at the scene: two Nissan GTRs, a Maserati, and one unidentified car, which appeared to have pulled over to watch the action. All of them left before the police arrived.

The tunnel near the Bird's Nest where the accident happened is one of the most popular sites for supercar racing in Beijing, due to it being covered and a long straightaway.

The mother of the Lamborghini's driver claims to be an ordinary worker for a company, and her husband a retired military officer. She denies any business or political connections that the family may have and says that her son's car was bought solely by his pool winnings, investment in stocks, and some family savings.

Reporters from the Beijing News verified part of the mother's account. By searching the name of the Lamborghini's driver, they found him being reported as a pool player a few years ago. He took fourth place in a city-level eight-ball competition in 2008, and won the championship of the Cuetec Nine-Ball Cup in 2009. Since that time, he seems to have disappeared from the media. Police records show that he is currently unemployed.

Here's some context that casts a bit of doubt on the likelihood all those winnings came from this guy being really sharp at pool and investing stocks: the 2015 China Open snooker tournament, which took place in late March and early April and enjoys massive popularity here, featured a top prize of GBP 85,000, about RMB 775,000. While it's certainly possible he won more hustling pool and then stir-frying stocks, he would have to win the China Open six times in order to buy a green Lamborghini (with the two-pronged crown).

The identity of the 20-year old jobless Ferrari's driver still remains in the dark. Evidence shows that he was using a fake license plate when the accident happened. The car was registered with a 京F**** license plate, while the photos taken on site clearly show that the license plate appeared on the car was 京N**458.

Both drivers have been detained and according to Article 133 of China's Criminal Law, reckless car racing resulting in serious violations of traffic and transportation regulations will be fined, and detained for no less than one month but no more than six months.

Supercar drivers to appear in court
SHANGHAI DAILY NEWSPAPER May 5, 2015, Tuesday
Two men are to go on trial in Beijing accused of dangerous driving after an April 11 incident where two supercars crashed in a tunnel.

Prosecutors said the Chaoyang District People’s Court would hear the case but no date has been set.

A guilty verdict could lead to six months’ detention.

Police in Beijing said that the scene of the accident, Datun Tunnel, was a popular venue for supercar drivers.

Yu, 20, was driving a US$500,000 Ferrari and Tang, 21, an US$800,000 Lamborghini at speeds of more than 160 kilometers per hour, about three times the speed limit, police said.

Both cars were badly damaged when they hit the tunnel walls and guardrails.

The two men, both unemployed, were unhurt but a woman surnamed Xu, a passenger in the Lamborghini, was seriously injured.

The Beijing Times said she suffered fractures to her lower back and had to have eight steel pins and two steel plates inserted. Doctors said her recovery would take at least 18 months.

Xu told the newspaper that neither she nor Tang was wearing a seat belt. She didn’t know that the two cars would be racing each other, she said.

The newspaper reported that Tang’s mother had paid about 150,000 yuan (US$24,150) toward Xu’s medical costs.

Xu, who still owes the hospital about 10,000 yuan, said she would be claiming compensation from Tang’s family.

Young drivers get months in jail for Beijing 'Fast and Furious' supercar race
May 21, 2015, Thursday | SHANGHAI DAILY NEWSPAPER

The drivers involved in the Beijing supercar crash taking place last month appear in court today in Beijing. They are sentenced to months in jail by the court for dangerous driving, which caused a female passenger injured while both of their cars severely damaged.
TWO drivers who staged a real-life "Fast and Furious" drag race in downtown Beijing last month received respective jail sentences of five months and four months on Thursday.

The supercar crash caused a stir online and hit headlines of Chinese media across the country then. It happened to take place only a couple of hours before “Furious 7,” the latest instalment of the street-racing “Fast and Furious” movie franchise had its midnight premiere on the Chinese mainland.

Tang Wentian, 21, was driving a US$800,000 Lamborghini and Yu Muchun, 20, was at the wheel of a a US$500,000 Ferrari, in the Datun Tunnel in Beijing's Chaoyang District about 9pm on April 11, according to police. The drag-racing cars careened through the tunnel guardrail before smashing into walls at speeds of more than 160 km/h about 10pm, causing both vehicles to be severely damaged.

Datun Tunnel has three lanes in each direction with a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour.

A 24-year-old woman in the passenger seat of the Lamborghini suffered a burst fracture of her lumbar spine, police said. The impact of injury will prevent her from any intense exercise for the rest of her life and she would not be able to get pregnant in the next two years, reported Phoenix News. She has filed a civil lawsuit against the drivers to seek compensation, according to Phoenix News.

They caused an economic loss of 320,000 yuan damaging the public facilities and had paid off after the crash.

They were charged for dangerous driving, according to the Chaoyang District People's Court of Beijing. Yu, who surrendered himself, will be jailed for four months and fined 8,000 yuan (about 1,290 US dollars), while Tang was sentenced to five months and fined 10,000 yuan (about 1,613 US dollars).

Both the supercars are registered in Beijing.

The Beijing News quoted a witness as saying there were also several other sports cars at the scene at the time of the crash.

The case also caused quite a stir on the Internet, renewing criticism on reckless behavior and blatant lawbreaking by some members of the "second wealthy generation", the children of China's new rich.
