Last week I took part in a little tour of Ferrari Classic Parts. For many years now, the worldwide franchise for parts for Ferraris out of production has been with Maranello Concessionaires. The Classic Parts building which, at one time was their service centre, is a short distance from the famous Tower Garage which has been home to Maranello's sales operation for 60+ years.

Maranello's is now owned by Sytner's which, in turn, is part of the Penske corporation. We were told that Roger Penske has a particular soft spot for the Ferrari Classic Parts operation and stops by whenever he is in town, knows everyone's name and likes to know what is going on.

You might think that shelves of cars parts wouldn't be terribly interesting but here are a few pictures so you can make your mind up.

Where appropriate, parts are re-manufactured. If possible, by the original manufacturer. But, if not, by alternative suppliers. Note the parts on this shelf are labelled as pattern parts for remanufacturing.

While we were there, one of the staff members was doing CAD drawings for a Testarossa transmission part. Apparently, Ferrari don't always have (or maybe won't always share!) the original drawings. But also, in this case, there is a known point of failure in that particular part so the intention is to strengthen it but without moving the point of failure to another part.

Apparently, the packaging depends upon the supplier, so oil filters, which all come from the original manufacturers, may be in the yellow Cavallino boxes or not. If I remember rightly, the blue and white boxes are for 360s and do still say "Ferrari" on them.

Parts are packaged and shipped worldwide.

Although, contractually, Maranello's have the franchise for all Ferraris out of production, the Factory have not actually fully handed over models beyond the 348 although Classic Parts stock parts for later models as well.

If you need a new engine for your 512 BB (carb) then, you're in luck. This one is brand new and has only ever been through its original bench testing. You might need deep pockets though...

While Rodger may love the operation he does not share the enthusiasm for supplying some slow moving numbers which have been cut but also no longer feels obligated to supply parts that are cosmetically correct as long as they work. Prior ownership were more driven by enthusiasm for the brand and less driven by the bean counters.

How do I get them to re-supply a steering rack or at least key internals of a particular rack? Who is the man to talk to?

The website is www.ferrariparts.co.uk where you can look for the relevant parts and see the contact details. If you look under Diagrams and select the relevant model you can see the relevant parts, prices, availability etc. Here is the diagram for 308 GTBi/GTSi steering box, for example www.ferrariparts.co.uk/diagram/ferrari/308-gtbi-gtsi/030-steering-box-and-linkage

These people are the real deal.

PS. They will work with you on pricing if you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Ask for Robert Bryant. Great guy and I have had nothing but great experiences with them.
