For the last few years I've been thinking about filming a documentary series on Ferrari. I'll be 50 in a couple of months so if I'm going to do it, I'd better start now as it will take me years to complete.

Originally, I was just going to do one on the 348 but it sort of morphed into something bigger.

The idea is to to film the entire history of Ferrari. Starting with the life of Enzo and then the cars, looking at design houses such as Touring, Pininfarina, Vignale, Bertone, Drogo etc before looking at the cars in detail and interviewing people and organisations connected with Ferrari such as race drivers, collectors, designers, historians etc etc.

This would be a unique series and I was also thinking I could make a standalone movie out of it as well.

But.... I'm begining to to have second thoughts and suffering from major self doubt. I have the skills and equipment to do it as well as the contacts, but some friends have said that it's a crazy project especially as it's self funded, I'm doing everything myself and it will take years to complete. Plus, finding some of the early cars may be next to impossible.

Once I'm in, I'm in, but at the moment I'm wavering.

Just interested in what everyone thinks.

    Thanks for reading.

Amazing project! But very ambitiously. You can always pay me a visit to film my 208 turbo GTB.
Hope you find the "drive" to start.

    Go for it!

Sounds like a great project, & I suspect you'll always regret it if you don't at least give it a try.

As you already know, much help & assistance would could from here too.

Think of it as your 'retirement project'. ;)

Gotta be honest though, a full scale movie sounds a little optimistic! (But neither do I know your background, so maybe.....)

    Good luck,
    Cheers,
    Ian

Something like that would make a terrific series for one of the car channels and/or a great multi-DVD release for owners and enthusiasts. In fact, I'm surprised someone hasn't already done it. But unless you're long on personal resources, self-funding such an ambitious project seems risky.

I'd say if it would be a financial burden on you to do it, then don't because it is unlikely to be a commercial success. However, if you are doing it for your own gratification, then definitely go for it!

I agree. Do what makes you happy as long as you aren't financially challenged by the project.

Can't say "no, don't do it!" as I am neck deep in a magazine company.

But you need to be completely realistic on what it will take financially, physically, and emotionally.

For starters - Are you doing this as a business venture? Or simply as a giveaway to the world?

    Thanks for the feedback.

Most of the my fellow filmmakers think I'm crazy to attempt it, especially as I'm doing it by myself. It's practically unheard of and one or two big production companies have attempted it in the past and failed.

Got a few meetings lined up, but at the moment it looks like I may go ahead with although I reckon it may take over 5 years to do as I'm filming other projects at the same time.

On a side note, interviewed Gordon Murray today whilst sitting in a £10 million F1. Very nice guy and an absolute genius!!

I think a high quality movie / bio/ historical documentary on Ferrari is sorely needed. much of what is out there is either in Italian, or just made up of people's opinion. I'd say now is the time to do it as we are losing those who were closest to Ferrari, more are dying every year.

Some people interviewed Franco Gozzi , and some others from Enzo's world, but its all in Italian, I think what would be fascinating is really getting to those people who worked and knew him personally- Piero's Mother ( if she is still living) his former driver/ Chauffer, the barber shop where he went every morning, the factory people who worked with him that really knew him. mostly what we know is kind of made up or just snibbits... a real down to earth evaluation of the man and those who knew him would be a great movie.

from nothing to a world figure done his way, its got parallels with Napoleon and Caesar... or the Wright Brothers and Henry Ford.

if you are looking to document the cars etc... then I think its not a great idea because there are tons of videos already out there. Niki Lauda's portrait of Enzo was not as flattering or glitzy as many others, but it painted him as a Man with severe flaws, but that makes him even more amazing as he was a product of his age and still succeeded against all odds. that is what is so gripping to me about Ferrari and the cars.

when you look at the life of Leonardo, Rembrant, Vermeer or Picasso, and Monet etc...- its their diversity and how they came up that is so interesting and makes their work stand out.

I hope you do it and do it right and with justice!
    sempre Enzo Ferrari.

Angelis, do you need a screenwriter? I have written five screenplays which were sold and produced.

    PM me!

It's not really about Enzo. It will have something about him as an intro but it will mainly be about the cars and people associated with the Marque. Ultimatly, it depends on how much Ferrari will let me do.

No need for a screenwriter on this project Jacob. It's just lots of research and finding people and cars to interview. I'm keeping it quite simple.

Not to be a bubble burster - but Ferrari SpA ... I doubt will let you do anything. they are extremely protective of the brand, marque etc... you may be better seeking Piero's involvement but you'll need to know someone on the "inside". Best of luck. I hope you will be successful.

    Thanks

Unfortunatly, all manufactures are getting more protective of their brands and getting archive material can be extremely hard or impossible. I'm dealing with Lotus at the moment for archive material about the Esprit and it's an uphill struggle.

I'd be very uncomfrortable asking people for money before I've even started the project. May consider it mid way through the project. Although i may just release a big block of the videos on subscription.

Yes, I have a copy of that. Mine will be completely different in style/structure and will not have a Presenter or any steadycams.

It will have shots like these:

    and interviews like this:

The majority of it will be filmed using a new 4K video camera I recently got. I was going to film the whole thing in 4K but the storage requirements and processing power for editing needed are huge. So it will be mainly HD or 2K with some shots in 4K.

1 Terrabyte equals 176 minutes, compared to 848 minutes for HD.

Although I may change my mind at the last minute. :D

    Here's a pic of the camera. It's a Canon C300 Mk2.

I was testing out multi camera filming which is why there is a smaller video camera attached to it. I can record 2 x 4k cameras or 4 x HD cameras into the big monitor on the right. That whole set up in the picture is about $21,000+. The camera alone cost $16,000. I'll probably be using between $80 to $100K worth of equipment to film it.

    Wow!

I know a little, but am certainly no guru, but I do know that that's some very, very, cool **** right there! Fabulous stuff!

Good luck with the project. Pretty much sounds like you've already decided to do it.

    Thanks ian.

Just to update this thread, I've got more people involved, unfortunately Ferrari are not one of them and they will not be helping out.

I'm still going ahead with this project, but in a slightly different way now.

Filming starts in a few weeks and will probably be shown on Amazon Prime late 2017.

I'm also filming another different series which features a Presenter driving around in my black 360.
