I was working on the 2300S today putting a new door mirror on and noticed that the quality of the electric window mechanism is FAR superior to the Ferrari wire/pulley mechanisms (I'm told BMW have a similar wire/pulley system).

You'll notice from the picture that it is a nice casting that all the door lifts work from and this is a 44 yo car !!!

It works fast smooth and well , and I don't have to pull it apart every few years to give it a tweak, grease or excuse for being crap !

I like working on cars but not all the time AND fixing the same part over and over again.

It all comes down to a poor basic design in the first place, just do a search on slow lifting windows or windows thta don't go up AT ALL !!!

It's a bloody disgrace in such an expensive car, and if the BMer starts the same crap as the Ferrari windows it can go.

It seems to have mainly been Italian manufacturers who had the stupid cable system. I know for instance that Alfa Romeo changed it on the 105 Series coupes from a sensible (and failsafe) gear type system to the cable system sometime around 1969. They went to the effort and expense of totally redesigning the inner door frame and mechanism, despite leaving the outer skins of the doors the same and even the handles in the same place...go figure.

It's a silly system, especially when you think that with a gear type system you can actually get mechanical advantage and a quick lift. Jaguars from the 60s for instance have less than 2 turns to raise or lower the window fully...

(A hobby horse of mine after battling with window mechanisms on both the 365GT and my 1750 GTV!)

yeah, replied to your advice , sending it again, catch you next week as I'm down for a few days and my engine should be turning up at Carl and Phil's place. Doing a clean out and looking for a buyer for the BMer and FIAT as well as the engine and other bits.

I hope Veena doesn't see "thin" Moretti, I'll never hear the end of it.
I may have to lie and tell her he has caught something nasty ;)
