I agree, at $1.5m, send it back to Ferrari, they'll make a brand new red Ferrari F40 out of it and you'll be in it around $2m.

Due to the fact that the F40 is over 30 years old, many are being restored, and factory (Zanasi) restored cars are bringing WAY more than $2 million as everyone who's even mildly informed about the market knows, so for someone with a $2m budget, that was a nice deal as you really can't buy any nice F40 for that sum, you'd need at least half a million more and then it goes up from there.

2 F40s we have recently sold are nº 83635 and nº 83587, we've just sold a 3rd, to be announced soon, FWIW many more cars change hands via Private Treaty than ever come to auction, or even via the advertised market, it's worth noting this market characteristic.

We have our first F40 announced for Monterey:

1991 Euro-spec #88538, painted aftermarket in 'Verde Pallido', a sort of mint green. This car has been marketed online by Schaltkulisse in Germany for a while now, so you may have seen it on Instagram. I suspect there isn't any coincidence between Schaltkulisse recently opening a US hub in Miami, this car appearing at RM's inaugural ModaMiami event earlier this year shortly after the car arrived stateside, and now this car coming to RM's Monterey auction.

    More info on this example:

    https://schaltkulisse.com/the-schaltkulisse-minty-forty-at-larusmiani/

10 years ago tomorrow, this car was offered by Artcurial in Le Mans while it was still in Rossa Corsa. Sports Car Digest reported it sold for 691,400 EUR (940,000 USD then, 1,239,000 USD adjusted for inflation). I attached the catalog listing, which belongs to Artcurial.

RM's estimate is below the market average for F40s right now, which I think reflects the non-standard color, above-average mileage, odometer replacement, and accident history.

Besides the 2 F40s we've sold mentioned above, 2 additional new F40 Private Sales have happened, I shall post the chassis numbers as well in due course here, so at the very least I'm reporting that F40s apparently remain quite popular.

Today 86537 was offered at the USS auction in Tokyo, Japan.
The starting price was 190'000'000 Yen (approx. US$ 1'175'000).
There was zero bid and the car did not sell.
The odometer showed 5'771 kms but the device had been replaced and the car actually has approximately 130'000 kms as written on Japanese dox.
86537 was delivered October 1990 new to Maranello Concessionaires in UK but ended up in Japan soon.

I think it should have been presented with the 135,000 km on the odometer worn proudly as a badge of honor, then it would have sold.

No kidding, if it wore it's real mileage, irrespective of condition it would be, IMO, the coolest F40 out there.

I was interested but unfortunately its almost impossible to road register an F40 in Switzerland if the car wasn’t delivered/Imported to Switzerland when new via Ferrari Suisse back then.

If the conditions are fair and clear no Issue to buy it and put more mileage on it.

It is correct that in Switzerland you can NOT legally register an F40 that has not originally been imported AND officially and legally registered in Switzerland back then, between 1987 and 1992.
Many people in Switzerland have tried to circumvent this but it is simply not legal. Every single F40 needs an "Einzelabnahme" (German word) (= separate specific and individual MOT approval for every single F40) and it will easily cost 100 Grand to adapt to Swiss laws and restrictions. People in Switzerland better buy a genuine Swiss delivered and registered car to avoid all the hassles. Right now there's a 1990 F40 available in Switzerland, which years ago was illegally "registered" through a Swiss dealer and now it is basically impossible to sell and re-register in Switzerland, unless the seller accepts a massive discount (think 500 Grand). And even then, you'd have to totally modify and adapt it to Swiss rules and regulations. Takes at least six or more months plus many ten thousand Swissies.

A fair number of our clients keep cars in locations that are not their home base, why can't a Swiss resident simply keep an F40 outside Switzerland?

He could keep it outside Switzerland but not drive it as this would be illegal because of taxes. It's called tax fraud.
