Ferrari F80

In the table below is a very simple comparison of new and current prices, and appreciation, of the F40, F50, Enzo and La Ferrari models. As the current prices of any of these models in some cases are very variable, the prices that appear in the table try to represent the average prices.
The first thing that catches my attention when looking at this table is the fact that the F40 was the model of the four that had the lowest annual appreciation. This will probably have something to do with its lesser rarity compared to the other three models. The F50 and the Enzo have enjoyed similar annual appreciation although the F50's average selling price is the highest of these four models.

The LaFerrari is the one with the highest annual appreciation, it has increased in value by almost two and a half times in eleven years. It is likely that this rate of appreciation will decrease over time, but at least another decade will have to pass for anyone to be able to make this assessment.

Regarding what the future price evolution of the F80 will be, it seems to me that the only model that serves as a comparison is the LaFerrari. The F80 will be less rare than the LaFerrari due to the 799 units that will be produced. The LaFerrari because it’s more rare, has a more appealing design and possesses a naturally aspirated V12 engine with a much better sound, IMO it will always be a more desirable car than the F80. However, if the F80 sees an increase in value identical to that registered by the LaFerrari, almost two and a half times in 11 years, its average price will be around 8,800,000.00 USD in 2035.

BUT: Please keep in mind that in the past what used to cost 100 Grand is now 1 Million. And what used to be 1 Million is now ten million. And on and on. Money simply has no value anymore.
And how about exchange rates?
BTW total production of F50s was 377 units. And Enzos 498 units. No matter what some sources claim, and we have been thru this already several times.
It would also be kool to include the 288 GTO's in that chart.

The 288 GTO has already been added to the table below and the F50 and Enzo produced units have also been corrected.
Although there is only a three-year difference between the launch of the GTO and the F40, the former appreciated annually approximately three and a half times more than the later. The only simplistic explanation I can find for this big difference in appreciation is the number of units produced, which in the case of the F40 is almost five times more. Maybe you have another kind of explanation.

In the end that is true, but Harry’s article said he could have had one for £160k in 2006 - 20 years after launch. That is still above list but well below the F40’s list and I think maybe the F40’s value at that time (not totally sure about that but I think so).

It means that 20 years after launch, it was worth less than the F40 which had around 4x the production.

it’s easy to think rarity is key but I reckon it’s third of three important priorities for value.

1. Timing
2. Appreciation
3. Rarity

 

Another way to look at this is to compare it to regular production supercars of the era. The F40 was 2.1 times the cost of a Lamborghini Countach Anniversary. The F80 is 6 times the list price of a Revuelto. And keep in mind that the F40 only acquired value in the last 15 years. I sold my car in 2008 for £210k with 10,000km and trust me it was not an instant sell. Not sure many people thought the LaF was a bargain when it was launched either. It was 2 times the Enzo and I certainly felt that the car was pricey. It has done well because the production is relatively low, the performance is excellent and it is a V12. However just 4 years ago you could buy a car for half what it is worth now and they were not flying off the shelf either, at least where I live.

Ferrari are testing the market here; They have not confirmed if the 799 cars to be made include Aperta or not, so people have to decide with no information. Time will tell who is right

 

just to push back on this point a little, it was actually not easy to order a manual example of the F430 (or 599). Ferrari was pushing their F1 gearbox hard after investing time and money into its development since the mid 90s. The factory did not want to build manuals, and dealers didn’t want people ordering them. It’s similar to the way shields are treated now. Sort of an expected option for customers, will require some pushback to get a car without them.

I'm curious to see how the SP3 would vary in this table compared to the Big 5, because despite being from another lineage (Icona), it has very similar characteristics to the latest Big 5, and is derived from the LaF Aperta.

I believe it will have the best appreciation curve (like the LaF Aperta). I know the launch price and the price of some units for sale today, but I don't know the average market price today.

The list price of the SP3 was around 2 million Euros and as far as I know deliveries only started by the end of 2022. I've seen several advertisements with SP3's for sale where the prices asked vary between 4 and 5 million Euros. Owners are free to ask for whatever price they want, but the question is whether there are buyers willing to pay already more than double the initial price of the car. My impression is that the number of transactions, if any has already happened, is probably very limited. The car is too recent and it will be necessary at least more 3-5 years to start building an historical with how many have been sold and and what's the average price.

 

Can we please keep this thread for the car itself? There is a separate "value" thread for those interested in accounting...
