I'm heading over to Italy for the Monza F1 in September and was planning on doing the Ferrari factory tour whilst over there. However, my plans are in crisis since I've just discovered that you can only do the tour if you're a Ferrari owner or supplier, or a family member or friend of an owner. Unfortunately I don't meet any of those criteria, I'm merely an enthusiast.

So, is there any other way to secure a spot on the tour?

I do have one idea though... I'm not sure exactly what they classify as a 'friend' of a Ferrari owner (I'll research that closer to September) but if an owner here was willing to help it would be greatly appreciated. Bookings can be made through any Ferrari dealer, so I assume the Ferrari owner would just call their dealer and say "hey my friend wants to do the factory tour, his name is Shane and here's his credit card details..." Something like that anyway. In return I can bring you back something from the factory or the Monza track - within reason of course!

    Cheers
    Shane.

There's a gazillion threads devoted to factory tours in the general areas of this site.

As far as Ferrari friends... I know heaps of Ferrari owners - at least 3!!!! And none call me a friend. :(

Actually CIT (the Italian tourist bureau) have very recently made a deal and tours ARE now available for 'outsiders' - I heard around A$160 includes Galleria, something of the factory (don't know how much) and also something of Fiorano test track. Find a proper Italian travel agent to check this for you.

Thanks for the links, the only relevant thread that came up when I searched for 'factory tour' was this one!

Looks like the factory tour is a dream for now, give me another ten years and hopefully I'll be in a better position... At least I can check out the Galleria and hang around the factory looking out for anything interesting.

    Cheers for the help guys.

    Shane :)

If it's any consolation, the tour isn't that great. Plenty of other stuff to do in the area though

That's what I want to hear! I've heard the Lambo and Pagani factory tours are good too, so at least I'll have those. Monza will be the highlight regardless.

The Ferrari tour is great in the sense that it is on everyone's wish list. The reality is less interesting, it's just an assembly point for a bunch of components built elsewhere.

    Things to do:

    1) The Ducati factory tour and museum
    2) The Ferrari factory museum
    3) The Ferrari shops at Maranello
    4) Climb through the bushes and watch F1 testing at Fiorano. Also at the Ferrari owned Mugello track about an hour away.
    5) Sit outside the main gates and the rear gates and do some prototype spotting
    6) Lunch at Montana restaurant. The food and service at Cavallino Restaurant is horrible and the prices insane.
    7) The streets around the factory in Maranello are full of sundry workshops/ repair facilities/wreckers for Ferrari cars.
    8) Lamborghini/Maserati/Pagani factories

You won't have time to get all of the above done.

We did Monza back in September 2001. To be honest it wasn't much fun; but it is drenched in history. The facilities are just pathetic compared to Melbourne and the crowds are enormous. Oh.................everyone smokes and my lasting memory is being trapped in a grandstand full of about 1000 people all smoking. That and watching the locals build double story, improvised grandstands that tottered precariously. Interesting to do once; but I can't see me going back.

Would have been ok some years ago when I was silly enough to smoke.

I know how 360C feels, recently went to germany for business again and everyone smokes.

You don't realise how lucky we are here with the laws until you go overseas.

The race where Ferrari ran without sponsors and had black nosecones in respect to 9/11. Must have been a pretty emotional event.

The last European GP I went to was Hockenheim in 2002, Schumi did the old pole/fastest lap/race win trick that he was go good at during that period. The Ferrari fans where rather insane there, but I'm told they're nothing compared to the tifosi at Monza. I'm counting down the months! :)

Maybe if it was in New York.

Did they run a similar livery when 1/4 of a million people died in the tsunami? Perhaps 3,000 Americans I never knew are more worth getting emotional about than 225,000 Indians I never met.

I have no idea how I found it, and couldn't give you directions, but there is a small park between the Ferrari factory and a number of apartment buildings. South side of the factory, I think. I stopped to have lunch there, and there is only a wire mesh fence between the park and the complex. You can see the new-off-the-production-line ferraris given their first run in the streets that run between the buildings of the Ferrari complex.
Pretty sure I saw a 599 prototype or something like it that way in July 2005.

Kind of silly question, because the tsunami happened months before the start of the season, whereas 9/11 happened a few days before Monza. Running with the black nosecones / no sponsorship was a sign of respect at Monza, running them in Melbourne three months after the tsunami wouldn't really have achieved anything. I'm not saying one was worse than the other, just stating a fact... Anyway, Schumi donated $10m from his personal stash, that's of far more use than simply running cars without sponsorship.

Go on the pagani factory tour. i was in awe when i walked through the gates, there were 3 cars in the drive way, 3 inside the show room, and about 5-6 in various stages of production inside the workshop, they let me stick my head inside the engine bay, have a good look around, showed us the "female room" which is where the carbon is layed, by women "cos they have smaller hands" i was told. it was funny, i knew more about pagani and the cars than the tour guide did, that said he had worked there for 2 weeks at the time... also while in the workshop they were testing an engine out the back, revving it to hell and back... i was 1m away from it...so good!
