    From the article:

"Ferrari's patent adds an extra feature to this system. A microphone in the cabin would monitor the sound in the passenger compartment. An electronic control unit would decide the optimal noise in the cabin and modify the electric turbo to produce the appropriate roar for occupants to hear. Depending on the driving conditions, this might actually make the electric turbo less operationally efficient but come with the advantage of creating a more attractive sound."

Congratulations, they have just become BMW. I can't wait.

I think many have argued it already happened in 1969. Others like Clarkson would point to 1999. Others say it happened with Sergio.

All the more reason to hang on to the classics.

I had read that there is some BMW that plays artificial engine sounds through the car's stereo system. That's what I was referring to.

    https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/bmw-m5-generates-fake-engine-noise-using-stereo/

BMW's Active Sound Design tech replicates engine noise inside the M5's cabin using the car stereo's speakers. What ever happened to just rolling down the windows?

Very sad indeed, but since it's not artificial sounds ala BMW, to me this is just similar to existing sound variable bypass valves in existing Ferrari. Take the Portofino of today; it already has in its exhaust system a new electronically controlled bypass valve to adjust sound levels.

I did at 100 F the other day, and it was like a blast furnace. Currently, it's 110 F.

Anyway, the Porsche 919 is a 4 cylinder, turbo hybrid, is it not? That's a nice bit of kit. I would be more worried about the synthetic noise generation than the turbos...T

If it's for the Dino resurrection and has a manual, all of you will love it. :)

One glimmer of hope is that at least they are using something that actually engages the turbocharger(s) a bit versus just playing a sound file a la BMW.

BMW plays sound through the speakers, this Ferrari system regulates the amount of sound produced by the engine so the cabin is more silent or more noisy. Totally different things.

In case anyone needed any additional confirmation...here is the math:

Manufactured sound > optimal performance = Shark Jumped *

    * although, of course, many would argue that happened long ago (at the latest when the Ferrari theme park idea was floated)

Gawd I hope not! They ruined that name in the early '80's.
