Drove GTS into shop today to do oil service and new brake pads. Read the good Doctors post on oil and went back with RedLine high ZDDP 5-40. Put on my lift backwards so short arms supported engine end and use a floor support to be safe. Followed Sticky Dave's PDF for oil change, thanks Dave! Went great until I tried to change the filter. Nearly an hour later, two people and 3 wrenches it came off!

    Not 18.7 ftlbs!!!!
    Everything else went smooth after.

I bought a complete Brembo Ferrari brake set and storing that safely for a rainy day, future sale or need. I picked up my favorite street pad WBR Ceramic brake pad in 1991 964 Turbo. Dropped right in, stop great, no noise and less to no dust.

    Cheers!

I am doing my oil change this weekend as well.

I learned along time ago having the right tool really helps streamline the process. I decided 15 years ago if I needed something, I would go buy it and just have it from then on.

Paid way too much for this from Ricambi....worth every penny :) If you were closer I would gladly let you use it.

I have that tool. I have 3 complete sets at my disposal. It started twisting. I cannot explain what happened, but it was tighter than my lug nuts on my semi truck!

But thank you for kind offer. My biggest fear was the filter fitting shearing off. It was ridiculous! We had to crush it and use an old school filter wrench down low and a filter clamp style to grip it.

Just a suggestion but I date all filters just so I know.
Then when i take them off I write in service manual with new mileage.

Did it. Date and mileage in paint pen, but the service manual is a nice twist. I saved my filter and oil receipts.

Really? That sucks... I know what will happen now, my damn filter will stick like a ***** when I go to remove it tomorrow morning. And I don't own an old school filter wrench.

Just watch this thread for details. :)

My buddy got down low on filter. I removed breather lines, some wire looms and other items in way. It was tight. I stood off to side and he straight from back. Broke a clamp jaw style filter wrench internally. Crazy. The factory fit wrench just twisted it at top.

Is it the heat? Did it all expand? And lock down tighter?

I tightened by hand and then a slight extra by hand. Was not taking and chances. Almost like they used factory filter wrench and an impact to install [emoji43]

I tighten mine each year to specification and never had an issue removing. I'll be doing an oil change in a few weeks when I find time to breathe :)

I use a Craftsman auto-adjusting oil filer wrench I bought about 15 years ago. As you put tension on the wrench in either direction, the flat spots on the three jaws tighten against the flat spots on the top of the oil filter. You have to hold it with your hand and the socket wrench in the other to get it started tensioning, but once you do it will take gobs of torque from the socket or torque wrench and not slip or bend. You can use a 3/8" drive extension or you can use a socket connected to a 1/2" drive extension. This gives you lots of options on length of drive extension and on the size of the socket/torque wrench.

I bought a 70 Chevelle SS396 about 15 years ago, and I couldn't get the oil filter off no matter what I tried. No traditional filter wrench would budge it, none of the end cap styles would take the torque without distorting, and even the screwdriver trick didn't work. A friend recommended this wrench. It took 80 lbft of torque to break that filter loose. I've stuck with this wrench ever since. I particularly like how accurate it is when installing filters. After you place a little fresh oil on the black seal and get it hand-tight, you can finish it with this and an inch pounds torque wrench, which doesn't take much as a little goes a long way. Plus, this thing is cheap as specialty tools go.

I agree. follow the specs and few issues arise. I wonder how many people use a torque wrench on an oil filter? You do. I do. But I think some see that as a little over the top. :)

Makes me nervous about the quality of the other work. Climbing around the car today, I saw some items that I would address differently. With a complete major service, heads done (guides), exhaust, etc, etc. I thought it might be a slight bit tidier?

I am a little anal, but not to the point of not enjoying it. Hell I want to daily this car [emoji16]

A little trick I discovered on the internet that actually worked.

I got into a stuck filter situation on my 355 with the first oil change I did on that car. I think the filter must have been installed without or with too little oil on the gasket. Essentially, the oil filter was sticking between the gasket and the raised aluminum oil filter manifold. It wouldn't budge at all. As a result, I now have every filter wrench imaginable, including the end cap one. BTW, the best for when the proverbial poop hits the fan looks like a giant set of pliers. It was bad enough that I saw another oil filter manifold with a pressure sensor included on ebay and I snagged that for around $100 thinking I know that I am going to break that thing off with the amount of lateral force I was subjecting it to trying to remove the filter. Tried a heat gun, tried some wd40 around the base. Eventually, I started to remove the filter, piece by piece as it was falling apart. It is a very nice filter internally. I had just about come to the conclusion to cut it off. Fortunately the dremel never had to come out.

What worked like a charm and practically within seconds of applying was....drum roll....GOO GONE squirted around the perimeter of the oil filter seal. The filter immediately started to loosen like nothing was ever wrong.

My car came from Dallas. Who did the last oil change service? Wonder if it was the same tech at the same place.

Great advice/trick. My buddy thinks it was put on dry too. The gasket looked bone dry [emoji15]

I just shipped car in from LA area. Fast Plane Eddy had it serviced out there. I am going to do most of my own service here in Dallas.

Glad to know you have a spare filter stand [emoji6]. I will keep that in my mental Rolodex.

Seat belt material attached to a piece of 1/2 internal square tube that your 1/2" ratchet attach's too, lower it down where it seats and Bam, it will undo every time no hassle. Available in every Australian auto store. There is no oil filter this wont undo, Im sure you guys could get this on Amazon. when im home next iwill take a picture and post it, they are the best!!!

Filter off and on without issue! :)

I have not driven my 355 since early December. If the weather holds, tomorrow morning. :)
