Does this give them an extra man to work on the car?

I've never seen this before. It's pretty clever actually as it's instantaneous and quicker for the driver to pick up. But, I wonder if it can be too quick an lead to a mistake also.

NOTE: I don't want to make this a spoiler so let's not discuss today's race in this. I'm just curious about the strategy and possible negative aspects.

    Nope, no restrictions there.

You haven't been paying attention, sir!..... They've had this system for at least two years now.... After they screwed Phil (last year?), I believe there's some kind of 'interlock' before the lights change, but they believe it gains them a few hundredths.

IIRC, Speedy posted a nice up close pic of it a while back - Talk about over-engineered!

    Cheers,
    Ian

They started this with Kimi and he had a huge problem with it and went back to the old system. This is when F1 teams were re fueling cars

It actually screwed Ferrari over a few years ago at this very track, and then again to ruin Massa at Singapore in the same year. 2009 I think?

That cost Massa the 2008 title when he ran away with the hose attached in Singapore.

Not scoring any points in the first 3-4 races of that year was worse IMHO

    Very old news!

I think that McLaren and Mercedes AMG are using a similar system too.

We always seem to return to the Massa Sucks theme.

A bit off topic but related to the Massa Sucks comment. The NY Islanders had a winger named Denis Potvin who was their team Captain and saw them through their four successive Stanley Cup Championships. Well the NY Ranger fans never liked him (gee I wonder why?) and they started to chant "Potvin Sucks". Initially, the chant would start whenever he was on the ice. The distaste for Potvin continued after he retired (and so did the Rangers' losing ways) . Out of frustration, for at least ten years after he had left the NHL as a player, they were still chanting "Potvin Sucks" at Madison Square Garden.

So back on topic, I think the Massa Sucks thread will be alive and well long after he is driving in NASCAR, ALMS, DTM, or wherever he chooses to go following his career in F1 :)

If I remember correctly the light system was triggered to soon and Massa went flying down the pit with the fuel hose still attached!

Yes it was, and the guy responsible ****ed it up.....
AS for Massa not scoring points in the first races, he was going to but His Ferrari engine blew up in Australia, as did Kimi´s, because in 2008 everyone had to use Mclaren made ECU (wich was described by several teams as ****!!!) and as they weren´t used to it, the made some sort of mistake in tining the engines and Kaput!!! It was a good deal for mac, because they didn´t had to adpt their cars, and won the championship by screwing the competition car....bravo...and this from a team who had cheated and been disqualified last year!!!!

And in a similar vein, they gain a few hundredths each stop with the articulated front jack that allows the jack-man to be stood to the side of the car already as he releases the car off the jack.

Rather than having to take a step back from the car and pull the jack back at the end of the stop, all he now has to do is pull the jack out of the way!

(Of course, you can lose a lot of time in a stop if your jacks are not engineered strong enough to hold the car up! :p )
