Here is footage shot by Peter Helm of my GTO--along with those of Chris Cord and Mario Tosi--at Willow Springs Raceway and in the canyons of Los Angeles back in the day. I saw this footage, which has been in storage since the 60s, for the first time a couple of months ago.

Thanks so much, Steve! What memories! Could that have been my white 330 that I bought in Germany and toured Yurrup with?

How sweet it is......! I was 15 at this time(1970) working after school for Kork'ys Kustom Studios in Van Nuys, doing all sorts of cool custom projects(some even for/with George Barris) and just beginning to learn my craft, and dreaming of the day I might own a Ferrari! It was such a great time to live in California then(I am a native, one of the few left), and seeing this old footage really brings back fond memories.........Thankyou, Mike

It is so fortunate that these cars were able to be "just old race cars" for a few years instead of immediately becoming mega-buck collector's items that then would have gone to a museum, a garage, a show field, etc. Even counting those older cars that were lost for neglect, I think that the benefits of enthusiat ownership were priceless in that they produced footage (and I am sure, memories) such as this.

I was just back from Vietnam, stationed at MCRD San Diego....how I loved running those canyon roads (in Porsches, back then). Having grown up in the flatness of Florida they were a revelation. This is California the way I like to remember it.

Holy Cow, that was cool! I lived in the Santa Monica mountains in those years (though I was only 10) and somehow missed you guys flying by my house. I know I would have never forgotten that sight! Thanks for posting this and I hope you have more...

This is such an amazing gift to be able to see this. The time you owned yours was a fantastically unique era -- A period when a masterpiece of automotive art could be used and enjoyed without concern for the absolute fortune they command today. The prank with the army green Cal Spider is particularly telling: If it was hard to gag Ferrari owners with that then, you'd cause heart attacks today!

I suppose this is like the time before the great impressionists were held in the esteem they eventually would. They were still paintings one would enjoy rather than a coveted asset. That window of time, like the one illustrated in your film, was only briefly open.

Regardless, thank you for these time capsules of SoCal speed culture. It's quite a treat.

Yet again another great video. Thank you for posting!

Thank you for pointing out those subtle differences in each of the cars. It just goes to show how much character they had. I have to agree that the LeMans lights should've stayed but to each his own... The army special California was great!

Anybody familiar with that stretch of canyon road in the film? I lived in Woodland Hills in the late 80s and early 90s..........could that have been Mullholland or somewhere off Topanga?
