I'm not making this up - I've been unable to get any Internet page aside from Ferrarichat all night - I've tried Hotmail, Facebook, government pages, company pages etc etc - every single page I've tried (by typing or favourites) returns 'can't display' - except Fchat is working fine; albeit a little slow...
    Any ideas, anybody?

You have been root-kitted. Time for a complete reload from scratch.

You local DNS server is probably down or you can't connect to it. Your computer would have the IP address for www.ferrarichat.com in its local hostname cache so it wouldn't have to query to look it up. Other domain names not cached would require a trip to the local DNS and if it is down, you wouldn't be able to resolve them.

If you are under windows and you do a "ipconfig /displaydns" you can see the hostnames (like www.ferrarichat.com) that are cached on your local machine.

To see if your local DNS server is down, first find the IP addresses of the DNS servers your computer is using (the IP address of the DNS servers your computer is contacting to resolve hostnames.. that is to get the IP address for a hostname). You can do that by typing "ipconfig /all". It is under "DNS Servers". Try to ping that DNS Server(s) IP address by pulling up a command prompt window and typing "ping <whatever IP address(es) are under DNS server>". If you get a response from any of them, you can try this in the command prompt window.

    > nslookup
    > server <ip address of dns server>
    > www.yahoo.com
    > quit

The nslookup command allows you to test an individual DNS server. You can type in different hostnames and see if it resolves them to ip address(es).

If the local DNS server is working, then you may have some connectivity problem to the Internet. Try typing "ping www.yahoo.com" in a command prompt window. If your DNS is working and you have basic network connectivity, ping should come back with something like this:

    > ping www.yahoo.com
Pinging any-fp3-real.wa1.b.yahoo.com [98.139.127.62] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 98.139.127.62: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=53
    Reply from 98.139.127.62: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=53

If that works, get the program "telnet" on your computer by doing this:

Start -> Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs And Features
Click "Turn Windows features on or off" on the left
Wait a long time for it to load the list
    Check "Telnet Client"
    Hit OK
    Wait some more

Then pull up a command prompt and type this:

    > telnet www.yahoo.com 80

Now, you won't be able to see what you are typing so don't make a mistake and type this:

    GET / HTTP/1.0

and hit return. If you mistype it, you can always pull up another command prompt window and try again. If you see a bunch of junk scrolling on the screen, then you can get a webpage from yahoo from your machine. If it just hangs and everything else above worked (DNS resolution and basic networking), then something is blocking your HTTP traffic (like a firewall or something).

Now, if all that works and you still can't get a webpage using a web browser on the machine, then the web browser is screwed up. If you are using IE, you can install Firefox and see if it works. Or vice versa.

Odds are 80% your local DNS server is down. If you are using an ISP, it likely means they screwed up. You can set the local DNS server your computer uses to something else if that is the problem. This explains how to do that:

    great advice

Kerrari: First reboot your modem. Second call your ISP, one of the big ISP's in oz had an outage last night. Unless you're in Hong Kong! Still make sure it's not the ISP before playing around with settingS!

Thanks for the comments guys, even if they make about as much sense as Swahili to me! Just weird that this is the only working page!

LOL! Could have been worse I suppose - wouldn't have got much help from the Bureau of Meteorology! BTW, I fixed it just by cleaning up, defragging, twiddling defaults etc... Then again maybe the problem was with the ISP and they git fixed! Whatever, I'm connected to the world at large again and not just Ferrari world...
