am i reading this wrong? looks like the track use only silencer is quiter than stock?

FIA noise emissions limit 112 dB
o Noise emissions of the standard silencer 108 dB
o Noise emissions of the silencer “for track use” 96 dB

That's the whole idea - to allow owners to use their car at noise-controlled tracks. Pay a fortune to make your 458 quieter at high revs? I think I'll pass.

Weird that a car for the race track is quieter than for street use!

What is the point of having a race track when you can't bear any noise? Are people living nearby so bothered? Can they even hear the cars some 2-3 miles away???

    Ridiculous in my humble opinion...

But many race tracks ARE limited to 100 db, and have been for 20 years ... heck I was nearly sent home once because I was just over!

Not much 'nearly' these days - if you're over, you're over and you're sent packing. At least in Europe.

I'm pretty sure tracks such as Laguna seca have strict regulations.

Laguna is 92 db and they WILL send you home if you break sound.

Lime Rock ranges from 86 to 95-ish depending on how much the track organizer pays (you can pay what amounts to a noise pollution fee), and they'll send you home too.

It's ridiculous but homeowners associations and environmentalists have good lawyers :(

You are correct. Almost all tracks nowadays, with the exception of the NASCAR ovals and Indianapolis have noise restrictions. Laguna Seca makes an exception for the Indy Cars, but that is about it.

SCCA sanctioned events are limited to 104db.

Unfortunately, urban sprawl is moving in on the tracks, so the tracks are forced into being good neighbors in order to survive. Summit Point WV is a good example. Once out in the middle of the country (about 60 miles NW of Washington D.C.), it is now becoming a bedroom community to D.C. SCCA and the track have gone out of their way to support the town (helped build a new library).

Noise does travel, some days more than others. 2 - 3 miles is a minimum barrier.

I can sympathize to a degree, no one likes noise when relaxing at home, but what do folks expect when moving near a racetrack? Now the track, likely operating in this secluded area for many years, has to satisfy all these newcomers?

I'm sure land/housing is cheap around an established racetrack, but you've got to accept certain tradeoffs...traffic on race day, visitors around town, noise, etc.

Rob- It is the same with airports. They are built in the sticks, then people move near the airport, then they complain about the noise. Airliners must meet much stricter noise regulations than in the past and there are also noise abatement departures requiring specific grooundtracks and reduced throttling, even though that reduced throttling actually slightly reduces safety. It got bad enough in San Antonio, TX, that Randolph AFB bought a bunch of houses near the runway, and leveled them.

Racetracks are no different so you just have to learn to live with the restrictions. Ferrari is to be applauded for coming up with a factory solution that has a minimal affect on performance.

LAX - All those sand hills to the west of the airport used to be expensive homes. In some instances it was not a voluntary sale.

Agree 100% if you live near a track or airport you need to accept that there will from time to time be noise.

As it is I dont think the std exhaust on the 458 is that loud!
