Looks like a good movie, I might actually go see that one. It looks like a heartwarmer, and who couldn't use one.

The movie features a black 360 not an F430

Sounds like it has a sports exhaust of some sort fitted or maybe they used sound of a different car (possibly an F430) over the soundtrack.

There was a review of this movie in yesterday's NYT. Story about an overly spoiled movie star. Don't recall an Fcar being mentioned.

I figured this would pop up on your forum.

I'm the sound designer for Somewhere. I recorded the sound of the Ferrari with a colleague, John Fasal, a specialist in recording cars for features. We were helped by Ferrari exec Matt Weiss, a very patient and enthusiastic co-worker. The Modena is featured in the film prominently, almost as a character.

One of your guys has observed that the sound of the car is incorrect. In fact, the sound is not a Modena but a 2010 California kindly provided by Ferrari USA. I had every expectation that we would have the correct car but for complicated reasons it was unavailable. The upshot being that when I arrived at our isolated sound recording location in the high desert north of LA at 7:00 in the morning, I was confronted not only with a red car but a different car. I was disturbed and concerned but smiled and said okay. Schedule, budget and Ferrari's generosity dictated that we go for it. I believe it was the only California in the US at the time and Ferrari went to considerable trouble to provide it plus it did sound good and characteristically Ferrari. However, I did think to myself that someone's going to nail me on this.

We recorded the car with two digital recorders, an 8 track and a 2 track. The 8 track was used in the interior. I sat in the passenger seat, the 8 track on my lap on top of which sat my Macbook Pro in order to choreograph the car to picture. There was a stereo mic for the cabin, 2 exterior mics for the exhaust, 2 mics for the engine compartment and 1 mic up front inside the grill for induction.

We worked all day till dark which unhappily meant I couldn't take the car for the spin Matt had offered in the more optimistic early hours. Matt probably wondered where the babes and catering were.

A footnote. I'm a '96 911c4s guy. During the early stage of my work, someone on my Porsche forum suggested I drop in on your site to find a car in the SF Bay area to do this recording. I was summarily told to buzz off and go to your ad section. Chastened but undaunted I decided to go the Ferrari USA route through the production and everything turned out peachy. The car sounds great and I had a lot of fun.

    Check out the movie.

    Regards,

    Richard Beggs
