If you have read the thread on the Stolen Ferrari, you would see how many have wanted the thief dead. Somehow, I don't get the feeling that the outpouring of support for the loss of a 25 year old Toyota Tercel would have been the same.

In my opinon, a Ferrari is way more than "Just a car".
It often is the reward that one gives onself for running a sucessful business.
The manifestation of a 20 year dream and passion for motorsports. The car is the Vision of a man devoted to running a sucessful racing team. The vision of the artist who dsigned it, and the craftsman who built it.

Those who call it just a car, either have no respect for the heritage and workmanship involved, way too much cash, or possibly, both.

I've wonderd about that too. It doesn't seem like you ever hear a guy with a 250 Europa or a 250 GTO say it's its just a car.

Funny you mention the car as a reward. I give myself a bonus every year (being self-employed). The 348 was last year's bonus. It also goes well with the ideals of an architect mixing art and engineering. AMC made sure to never mix art into anything they built and so I would be shocked if anyone got crazy about an old AMC being stolen.

I was at Cavallino 1 year & I got into the elevator w 2 Non car people & the woman of course was complaining about all the "Cars" The man seemed to be whipped & or clueless so he went along.

Ferraris are art & they represent a specific culture & history. Any1 who says its just a car is clueless. Just ask them if they think the Sistine chapel is "just" a cieling or a DaVinci is "just" a picture

They are just cars and the other stuff it is just art, but there is something special about being lucky enough to own them.

Lots of people like that. Their car is on the same footing as their washer or dryer; an appliance.
And I guess they think sex is just for reproduction and food is just for nutrition. Why savor or get creative about either?

What is that?? I know it is not the Paster (oops, I mean Pacer). Definitely not the Matador. Not the Eagle. Not the Gremlin. Not the AMX. Maybe someone played a joke on the AMC guys if that came out of their factory. If it is from AMC I take exception to my earlier comment, but it would be the exception that proves the rule. AMC's suck!

If they're "just cars," then a Monet, Manet, van Gogh or Chen Chi piece is paint and canvas just as a Sherry Salari Sander sculpture is clay and bronze.

Ferrari's are works of art. They represent more than metal and rubber. They represent a passion for all things wicked, beautiful, harmonic, elegant and a personification thereof.

Not all get this concept and I actually am happy about that. Those of us that do have a unique bond. Those that have Ferraris are quickly distinguished between true enthusiasts and mere posers.

The support I received when my little 2V 308 was stolen was, to me, not to help with a possible financial or material burden but to assist with the emotional roller coaster of knowing my greatest, non-kindred, possession was in ill-willed hands. 10,000+ views and @250 posts between two threads indicates the bond shared on this site.

    Forza Ferrari.

    Get a life.

It IS just a ******* car.

And NOT the nicest one I own and a pain in the ass to maintain.

And quite frankly the "Ferrari experience" is a bit of a let down after all is said and done.

After all the devastation of the past few weeks you come up with this BS.

    OK, I'll play devil's advocate:

When I was learning to drive the family car was a 1974 Carrera. No Ferrari but a pretty special car, a homologation special with hand-beaten aluminum rear fender flares. I had occasion to learn about some of the special parts when I was run off the road and collected a mailbox, at 15, with my father's GF in the right seat (thank dog, a witness!) Needless to say I was frantic, and called my father: "I wrecked your car!"

I'll never forget his first words: "Is everybody OK?" That really helped put things in perspective. As special as a car is, there are more important things. It helps to remember that sometimes, especially for those of us who love cars and think of them as special. I know I love mine even if it's only a VW, but then I loved my 2002, my 510, even my Fiesta! So I certainly won't argue with anyone who thinks their Ferrari is special! As long as you keep things in perspective.

And oh yeah that punk that stole that 308 should be neutered with a bear trap and left to bleed out, but that goes for any thief AFAIC.

Edit to add: Yes, this is a great site with some good folks, it's why I stop by now and then. Even a newbie like me with a lame question was treated hospitably.

The car isn't the issue. It's the sense of personal violation and powerlessness that someone feels as the victim of a crime. This incident just got our attention because the thing that was stolen is of common interest. We'd all be more teed off if this was a burglary than a car theft.

Also, to a much lesser extent, the car is something that was treasured by its owner, whom I remember called it a "special little thing" in his first post on it. It's disturbing that someone can't be allowed to enjoy a special little thing like a well-used Ferrari without some low-life messing with it, or someone trying to make you feel guilty for missing it when it gets stolen.

Making fun of the criminal is cathartic for everyone. It reminds us that collectively we are much stronger than Mr. Widner.

    Get a life.

    It WAS just a hurricane.

And NOT the biggest one to ever hit.

And quite frankly this "Katrina and Rita experience" is a bit overhyped after all is said and done.

We deal with nature all the time, its nature. We show a man who had something he worked hard for stolen some compassion and you come in with this BS.

There are no lame questions. If you don't ask, you can't learn. I know I've learned from others, self-proclaimed, stupid questions. BTW, I hope you keep visiting and asking those "lame" questions! ;)

    This is Ferrarichat, not Toyotachat.
I'm sure that the owner of a Toyota Tercel would be just as devastated if his or her car were stolen and banged up.
And I'm sure that his or her friends and colleagues would be just as supportive.

Enzo always made very clear that Ferrari´s are built to be driven, so it is safe to say Enzo viewed upon his creations as being cars. Stunning cars, but cars nonetheless. An object which is meant to be used as such.

Of course Ferrari´s are beautiful in the broadest sense of the world, but once we stop realizing what it really is (a car!), then they are all destined for the art-museum. Now, wouldn´t that be a pity?

this is an unfair characterization of non car people, i know many people who are not into exotic cars but still are passionate about other things and life in general..they just have different hobbies and objects that they are passionate about....of course they think i am a nut being so into cars and treating ferraris like animate objects...maybe we are are ones who are crazy??? nahhhh!!!!!!

For those who think that Ferrari is "just" a car have no more dreams or never had any to begin with. The day you stop dreaming is the day you might as well not even get out of bed...... IMO

I'd have to disagree with you there. Dane had his beautiful car stolen. A personal tragedy. But he is the first to admit that in the end, it is just a car and the important thing is his family.

I have friends in Louisiana and Mississippi who lost everything they own. House, cars, clothes, personal possesions, everything. Gone. Many people not only lost everything they own but also lost the place where they work. I can't imagine being 30 or 40 something years old with a family to support and then one day everything is gone. No house, no car, no job. Everything you had worked hard for all your life gone in the course of a day. I don't think the tragedy is "overhyped" at all. If it had happened to me I don't if know if I could just shrug my shoulders, and say, "Well, it's just a little weather."

Also, I would have to agree that there was an outpouring of sympathy for Dane on this site because it IS a Ferrari site. This is where people who love Ferrari's congregate and we hate hearing about something bad happening to a fellow Ferrari lover. If this was Hondachat.com and some teen got his rice-mobile stolen, I'm sure the threads on that site would have been much the same.

In the end, it is not what you drive, it is who you are.

See, that's just what I mean. I'm just doing the usual self-deprecating "I know I have a low post count so I don't really expect much," and someone always says, "no, everyone is welcome here!" Any Fchatter that gets to Dubai, I hope they will let me buy them a beer :)

Yeah, I agree. You should have been there the weekend I spent in the Cherokee National Forest with a bunch of entomologists. Beer in one hand, butterfly net in the other. These folks LOVE bugs, as much as we love cars. And you're thinking, that sounds crazy, but to other people lvoing cars is just as crazy.

The people I feel sorry for are the ones (and they are few, believe and hope) who haven't found a passion, be it bugs, cars, airplanes, or whatever. Having something to get up for in the morning besides work is what makes life worth living.
