I haven't read every post regarding the looks or design of the LF, but this one stood out to me, and I have to agree. Now, I'm no world-famous designer, nor am I in any financial position to ever own one myself (therefore my opinion should count for nothing), but as someone who has studied design for years now, both automotive and industrial, I just can't help but feel disappointed by this new car. When I saw the first images of the front end posted yesterday morning my first impressions were "OK, I like where this is going"... it had potential. Then I see the photos from the side... and rear... and I almost wanted to dismiss it as being just another render. (That being said, there have been some pretty solid renders... some of which I'd much rather would have preferred to have been under the red sheet at the unveiling, personally). The front end works for me, for the most part. It may not be the most asthetically beautiful thing, but it is striking, like it or not. The front fenders as well, tuck nicely down behind the front wheels and disappear into the front vents. And this is where is ends for me... The rest looks unfinished, almost as though they were'nt sure what to do. Or, as others have mentioned, it looks as though the individual areas or components were not done with the end product as a whole in mind. The side vents by themselves work (very Mazda Furai-esque). The roofline works. The raised "V" shape (as some have referred to it) in the body, going up the side of the rear window, work (as on the P4/5, and 458). Put them all together though, and it all falls apart. The rear end, in my opinion does not work at all. Visually it is too heavy. The front of the fenders (just in front of the rear wheels ) do not pinch in nearly enough, and the slope is much too lazy. There is no "muscle" to it. Directly from the front, or from the back, it looks harder and edgier... more like that of the Enzo. From the sides it looks curvy and soft, and again, much too lazy. Put them together and it just doesn't appeal to me. When the Enzo came out, it was different and edgy enough that it made people go "whoa", whether you like it or hated it. It was unique. The P4/5 had the same effect. I also would have liked to have seen a twin turbo V8 on board. Keep the KERS, but ditch the 12. Many have argued that in a car such as this, people expect the exclusivity of a V12... and while I can appreciate that point of view, I also believe that like everything else on earth, times change. And we need to adapt.Technologies advance, processes are improved... there are better, more efficient ways to achieve a goal. For those wanting that sound (yes, its all part of the experience), with todays modern engines, variable intakes, exhaust tuning, etc... there is no doubt in my mind that a company with the resources such as Ferrari would not have been able to produce a flat plane 8 with billet-wheeled turbos and tuned exhaust that sounds completely wild. Is the F40 that less desirable being that it's an 8? I would say no... and that's with 25 year old technology. Again... in the big scheme of things my opinion means no more than anyone elses. A lot less than others in some cases. As is, it's technically a hell of a car, sure, and you can't really take much away from it. I just would have like to have seen something different. More innovative. Ground-breaking. Something that would have made me say "Wow...". Instead, the LF comes off as dated, incomplete, and behind the times of what should be relevant. Very similar to the way a woman in a revealing outfit or lingerie gets the heart pounding with intrigue and anticipation, only to disappoint when the clothes hit the floor, I wish the body cladding never came off.
Awesome. I noticed in some other photos how the doors expose the tub. Best opened look since the Boxer.
After reading almost all 882 posts in this thread my conclusion is that like many here I was pretty disappointed with both the design (design school undergrad concept car -- at least in the initial pics) and the name (head slap) at first but after even just one day, I'm already starting to soften on both and reviewing the track footage in the launch video again this morning helped quite a bit. However in contrast, and to give you an idea where I am coming from, my reaction to the 458 was and still is without reservation, 100% positive so with that as a baseline, anything less than that can seem more disappointing than it needs to be. As usual Ferrari is being bold, provocative and well, just Ferrari. And our general reaction? Not too far from the Enzo (or Testarossa for that matter) when it arrived and I think over time has stood up more than well alongside it's predecessors and certainly hasn't diminished Ferrari's reputation in any case to say the least. I would also add that what may be really interesting in the near future is the performance of the KERS system in the wild -- that is if anyone actually drives one like it was meant to be driven, LOL. Chris Harris, Jeremy Clarkson, Jay Kay are you listening? Do I think at this point that certain elements of the exterior design could have been improved? Yes. Do I think they could have (and should have) come up with a better name? Definitely yes, but ultimately I'm more interested in the overall design and performance to determine my level of desire for the car, so the name is not that big a deal for me. Also, I suspect, as has been true for other Ferrari launches, seeing it in person could change my reaction entirely. Bottom line is at his point whether you love it, hate it or are somewhere in between I'd be willing to bet most of us here will still get pretty excited when we get our first chance to see it in the wild or at a show and as such, for me the Ferrari mystique continues.
I was wondering if this car would open in its finished form. The McLaren P1 does not and I think that is my one big disappointment with the design/construction of their car. There's a bit of theater created with these cars when you open the hood. McLaren chose not to to save weight and strengthen the car. I'm glad to see Ferrari has not taken that route. >8^) ER
