Mark knew the lap time. I don't know from who or where he got the message from - I just know he was right. Memory is a little fuzzy as I'm having quite a long week, but I believe he had it well before some of the owners who asked were made aware. Even still, he gets a lot of respect in the community. Youthful exuberance can be an appreciated skill. I don't like the word 'expert' - at least not being used to describe me as I still have a lot to learn. I do my best to keep up and help out those who have questions where I can. 'Historian' is an appropriate description of some of my activities, but while I am good at it on one particular topic, I couldn't translate that into something I didn't have a very strong passion for. >8^) ER
bla bla bla. P1 lap time doesn't exist. The reason? They have still not published a definitive Nurburgring lap time on the P1 because they know this lap time is easily beatable if not already superior to 918 lap time. The P1 superior performance doesn't exist. This lap time story is just ridiculous.
Do you think McLaren are keeping the time secret until the other 2 cars are in full production so that way they don't have to worry about further "updates" from the other manufacturers and they can remain on top? Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
If this is the case, this is just unfair, arrongant and stupid. This pure marketing approach -bluff - has nothing to do with a fair and sporty technological battle.
Is the last number for the seconds even or odd? You got 50% chances of getting it right anyway and I'm sure you can disclose that much.
You are an expert. You are the de facto source for everything and anything McLaren. Alright, Mark knows the lap time. I was wrong. Good for him! If the lap time is so "special" that they can't even mention it in public, it can't be worth talking much about... They did it on slicks, I know that much. Guys, there is no point trying to fish for anything related to the laptime from Erik or Mark. They'll never tell us on a public forum, until McLaren themselves give a statement. I repeat my question; who honestly and genuinely cares? So what if the P1 turns out to be the fastest of the 3 around the 'Ring on that one day? Makes no difference whatsoever in the real world.
This lap time doesn't exist. It's a pure waste of time speaking about something that doesn't exist. If you are not member of Mclaren religious group*, all this strory is astounding. *"Believe in God -Ron Dennis and other Mclaren's gurus- and what the're saying even without a minimum of evidence." and "who honestly and genuinely cares? So what if the P1 turns out to be the fastest of the 3 around the 'Ring on that one day? Makes no difference whatsoever in the real world." Thanks, Mister!
Is There? Which one? It's the difference between a real lap time and a concept. I mean: a lipe time is a number that is given and has been proven.
Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd? Even or odd?
If somebody from Porsche's marketing department emails me information to spread across car forums for free it doesn't make me a Porsche expert nor historian. It makes me a marketing volunteer with a hard drive.
I agree. It really doesn't matter to me anyway, I just find McLarens attitude very strange. I didn't think Jay would mention it in his review as I get the impression that he typically wouldn't be concerned about such things. Why McLaren want to make people believe that Jay Leno isn't worthy of knowing the time, I'll never know.
It's not only that. The irony is, where's the fairness (unless we just call ourselves paid McLaren representatives). Observations: Mark Antar is very fair, from what I've read in giving other manufacturer's credit, when due . No argument there. Mr. Peloton, a bit less so and grudgingly. However, I've rarely/never heard either one of them DIRECTLY CRITICIZE McLaren, especially regarding their current P1 efforts and Ring Debacle. This is where you ask, "where are the independent minds"? For example: No matter how fast and successful the 918 is, I can criticize Porsche for not including a 2 speed electrical motor in the front engine. Now Porsche has their reasons (weight). However, I'm not buying that. An extra eight pounds appears so negligible (though I've read Porsche's reasons and explanations pertaining to this). Regardless what the correct answer is (if one exist); Porsche and I disagree. And I have others as well, pertaining to the 918 and other Porsche's. I can pick out things regarding Ferrari, and the LaFe just the same. I've never seen either one of those two disagree or criticize McLaren's current strategy on the P1. Any fair minded person would say, "until McLaren runs the ring under proper timing and witnesses, there is no time". However, we get crazy reason after crazy reason (secret/insider memo's, e-mails, whispers, clandestine meetings, promises, personal declarations, etc.), why it does exist. LMAO. If Porsche handled the Ring the way McLaren did, I would criticize Porsche as well, or at least acknowledge a REAL time doesn't exist. It's that simple. Independent minds don't act that way, believing in what someone tells them, when they proclaim to be independent. Don't we all live and operate outside of the Halls of Woking, Stuttgart and Marranello? At least Ferrari was smart enough not to be embroiled in this type of nonsense. Once again, I'm not saying their overtly critical of others car makes PerSe, and don't give credit. They do (particularly Mark). However, the two may unwittingly (or maybe not) come off as shills for the brand by always defending everything McLaren. Seemingly, Woking can do no wrong in their eyes, especially concerning the P1.
I know you're being purposely vague about the whole thing but it's just very unclear why McLaren would be in constant contact with you. Do you own a McLaren? Is it a business relationship? Do they turn to you for information of some kind?
Wouldn't it be better to eloborate on your relationship with McLaren in public to further strengthen your credibility?
Perhaps it is like Tesla. When the Roadster first came out it had different gears. Later they decided one speed was much better, faster. The Models S and Roadster both top out at ~135mph, the same speed the 918 e motor tops out and disengage.
The first number is even. That's all you're going to get out of me because that's all McLaren have chosen to publicly confirm. And no, it wasn't an 8 or a 4. Hardly accurate - as an outsider there is a tremendous amount of knowledge I don't have. I do try to pay constant attention and I do have many helpful sources, but I don't pester people for every little detail (ever) so there are a number of gaps left over. This is not accurate. Thank you. Exactly! These times are pointless, incomparable with both each other and (in the majority of cases) with the reality of a what a standard production car not prepped for the Ring by a team of engineers would do if it showed up on a Tuesday morning and paid the fee. >8^) ER
