About a month ago I posted that I had received a phone call from someone that wanted help locating a starter motor for one engine in a dual engined Ferrari powered speedboat. They did finally call back yesterday and today I drove out to their facility to have a look. I is not Ferrari powered, but is still a very interesting machine. There is a Ferrari emblem on the stern and on the instrument panel. They do have the look of being original and not just added on by a wishful owner. The engines are Italian. They are aluminum, cam in block, four valve, hemi V8's.

The one starter that they do have is a Marelli and it is larger than any V8 Ferrari starter motor. It is the size of a Ferrari V12 starter. I am going to contact Riva first and see if they can help (the boat is a Riva 32). If they aren't able to help, I will talk to some of the Ferrari and Italian parts suppliers. The engines are contra-rotating and the starter runs directly on the flywheel ring gear, so the starter motors need to turn in opposite directions. I haven't checked yet to see if the one that I have is the "normal" one or the "backwards" one.

    Hi,
If I had to guess I would say they are B.P.M. a manufacturer of gasoline engines used also on some of the Italian Coast Guard patrol boats.

Thanks very much for your tip. I was able to verify that they are, indeed, B.P.M. engines. I don't have my notes with me, but I think that they are a little less than 500 cubic inches and a little under 400 HP. I do have a promising lead for parts: hoping for a positive reply to an e-mail.

    Thanks

May not be Ferrari engines but very interesting none the less. Good luck with the repairs.

    Hello Sowest,
I believe BPM is still alive, thus parts should be available and if I am not mistaken, they even had a V - 12 in production, at one time or another.
    Good luck,
    Saluti,
