Ferrari Spa with the local SPQR Warm Up Kft. firm have opened a showroom in the Outer Vaci street in Budapest, Hungary. Mr. Piero Lardi Ferrari was present at this celebratory event. On display is a Ferrari 430, an 575M, a Maserati Quattroporte, Spyder, Coupe and the newest Gransport. They plan to sell six Ferraries and 20 Maseratis during 2005. There are currently 17 known Ferraris and 20 Maseratis in Hungary.

This hungarian saloon is a bad move, IMHO.

Hungary is renowned for worst condition paved roads in Europe. Barrel-sized potholes, nine yard repair patches every ten yards, giantic longitudinal and transverse waves of deformed asphalt (the roads were not built for 18-wheelers). Even the few local autobahns are poorly maintained.

There is no way a delicate sports vehicle with low belly and partially exposed machinery can negotiate these roads. Suspension repair is a hungarian national sport. Even regular cars, like a Ford Mondeo or Opel-Vauxhall Astra suffer tremendously, the uneven roads constantly shake the cars.

I guess those 17 Ferraris already here must be garage queens mostly, for local roads are minefields for them. The landscape will be littered with brand-new stricken Ferraris and demolish the brand image. Not Ferrari, but Lamborghini should come here and sell the tractors they make!

Many thanks for the link. Great shots of the Gransport, especially. It is so chic inside. As for the business itself, I know next to nothing about Hungary except for the beautiful women. ;)

    Forza,

There announcement is on the front page of www.ferrariworld.com, in the bottom news section. You have to wait until the "fog cancels Fiorano test" and "last day for Gene" items scroll away. It's a flash, so you cannot copy&paste it.

Tamas, I spent a bit of time in Gyor. I didn't think the roads were that bad.

Gyor is the westernmost part of Hungary, bordering Austria. It is significantly richer and has much more foreign owned industry than the central (Budapest) or eastern part of Hungary. Therefore the state spends much much more there.

The road condition in Budapest is a total disaster. I shall not speak in vain, I will punish you with photos that make you fear for your dear Ferrari! If you come to Budapest, use an off-road 4x4!

The big photo with patchwork road mean that particular strip of asphalt has never been "recarpeted" in 20 years, but digged up several dozen times when water, CATV, telephone or water pipes needed to be fixed.

Intercity roads aren't any better. On one road where potholes killed several people that put a 30km/h speed limit in place 8down from nominal 80km/h) instead of repairing it and secretary of transport said he thinks that is a great solution.

The red 355 spyder is now gone. The silver F575m coupe is still there. And a new F430 coupe in red has arrived. It looks way better than the red F360 did, IMHO.

Somewhat off topic, I'd like to visit Budapest with a couple of friends, would you have any pointers for a young guy for a fun time?

I am an American and I just visited Budapest it was a great time in a beautiful city.

I also stopped by Ferrari of Budapest at H-1138 Budapest, Vaci Ut 175. I met with Dr. Alessandro Lippi. Mr. Lippi spoke perfect English, was extremely cordial and was happy to show me around the store. They had one very nice pre-owned F car on the showroom floor that they were selling for a client. They also had a Ferrari store connected to the Dealership with some very nice clothing and accessories.

The store was easy to get to: I took the blue line metro north to the seventh stop from the Deak ter (central switchover) and came up by the Dunas mall and walked a few blocks North to the dealership on the right.

I highly reccomend a visit to this city. It sounds and looks like Budapest/Hungary is making it's step up in the economic world. Despite the protests from the far right it is a safe city. I saw alot of foreign investment money going into Budapest. The inflation rate is good for property owners but not so good for the average citizen. I hope the switch to the Euro doesn't hurt the general population.

Ferrari for the Hungarian roads ... its funny :D

The roads are one of the worst in central Europe ... only Romania has worst roads in the neighborhood (potholes that bigger than a Bus) ...

I can remember that there was a huge pothole in the riverside of Danube ("low-bund") ... within a short time (must be 2 min.) more than 20 cars has a breakdown ! The biggest injury was owned by a Jaguar XK Coupé (more than 5 Mil HUF ~ 26000 $) ... That's what etomcat talked about ...
