Define "crappy inspection".. in retrospect to a demanding customer: anything at all that was missed no matter how small including the "hood shocks being weak or not working" (hehehe). Nothing is ever good enough to some people.

"If a shop can't do it right, they should not be doing it."
It's this attitude why shops don't do them. And I don't blame them.

That's what I found when Porsche shopping. Only an indie shop would do a PPI, and that was an explicit checklist.

I have to agree that the "stuff" missed on the PPI us not actually the stuff you pay for a PPI to look for.

I would want a PPI to do the compression and leakdown tests and internal mechanical inspections I may not be able to do on my own, but checking to see if all the bits and pieces are included, and whether the dome light is cracked... Sorry. That's the buyer's responsibility.

(That said, if you can't make it out to inspect the car in person, I did read a post on this forum from a member who arranged for our very own F-Chatter NNO to go and inspect a vehicle for him. From the sound of it, that would definitely be the next best thing to an up close and personal look, perhaps even better, and from the sound of the expectations outlined above seems to be the kind of inspection the OP should have arranged for, instead of a normal mechanical PPI. Oh, and I'm pretty sure NNO Doesn't give guarantees either, just opinions and observations, but I'm sure he made note if the serial number...)

Exactly. Carbon (NNO) service, 'Beyond PPI', is designed for stuff like this. A normal PPI is for major mechanical not for small bits like a blown speaker.

Hell, I went to go check out a Mercedes R Class for a member here two or so years ago. It's not that hard to ask in the local sections.

then he hasn't done many PPI's. anyone that has done a few PPI's has been burned and knows to get something signed ahead of time.

My question is did they even find anything wrong? If not and everything was OK then they're idiots. I'd expect a full refund of my $500 for the lame @ss job. Go get 'em. :)

This thread is very interesting reading.
I recently had 2 PPIs done.
One for my son's 2005 Mazda RX8 and one for the 1996 355 I just purchased for myself.
    Both were done by Indys.
The report on the RX8 included every cosmetic flaw, including the most minor scratches and small warn parts in the interior.
The report on the 355, which I saw in person, included minor scratches that I did not catch when I saw the car, and I thought I went over it with a fine tooth comb.
In both cases, there was not one surprise when I took ownership of the cars.
Curiously, the RX8 PPI was more thorough than the Ferrari as far as cosmetic flaws.
It included 15 or so hi-res pictures of the scratches and flaws that the inspector found.
I asked for more of a mechanical check with the 355.

    I beg to differ.

As a Ferrari owner I find it perfectly reasonable to own seven Ferrari's.. one for each day of the week.. or twelve for that matter, one for each month to prevent boredom. ;-)

Prudent. Now that's a different story!

Don't think the OP gave more details on the purchase. It sounds like he could not or chose not to inspect the car personally before buying.
If buying such a car I'd certainly want to have everything he listed included in a 'sight unseen' pre-purchase inspection.
On a $2500 Honda Accord I'd overlook a blown speaker or missing key, but a relatively new $100k+ car? Seller should disclose these things and/or a PPI should include them. Have a top mechanic do the leakdown and major component inspection and a young hourly dude go through a cosmetic/audio/paperwork/etc checklist.
I'd equate it to a home inspection but usually a home buyer will be the one to first see cracked light fixtures, stains on the carpet, dead grass etc. However, some $500 home inspectors will check and note every outlet, faucet, window etc.
Nothing wrong IMO to expect a thorough list of exactly what a PPI will be checking, and to expect to sign a waiver that anything outside the described scope is the buyer's sole responsibility.
