Is there a thread on this topic? The question arises in the context of the Mondial 3.2 that was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1985. Are ther technically any Mondial 3.2 's built in 1985 that are considered model year 1985? Or are they all 1986's . Same applies to the 328 introduced at the same show. Isn't September production near the cutoff date for the following year?

As I am aware, model year on US spec cars is determined by a letter in the VIN- the eth from the right. An 85 would be an F 86 would be a G- Also as far as I know European model years correlate directly to a build date in that year. Hope this helps

There is a post somewhere but I don't know where.

If I remember correctly the model year / production date difference results primarily from the U.S. market and its registration requirements. The difference is that Ferrari determined a model year by the date of production (made January till December) while U.S. had a different production year concept based on released dates and marketing. EG. a car built in October would be from the following model year in the U.S. but the preceeding producing year in Europe.

    Hope it helps.

That is interesting thanks. So it seems that there could be two Mondial 3.2 models built the same day/week and be different model years if they were destined to two different markets. I had never seen a 1985 model Mondial 3.2 but then again I tend to see only North American cars.
