My family and I just saw the new “Ferrari” movie on Christmas Day. I have to say we really enjoyed it. If I’m honest, I was apprehensive before seeing the movie but was pleasantly surprised. It talks a lot about Enzo’s son Dino. You can see how special Dino was to both Enzo and his wife. It made us think about why Enzo wanted to name his smaller mid-engined range “Dino”. If you’re on the fence about seeing, I totally encourage you to go. The movie is about a pivotal year in his life, 1957.

I'm going to see a special showing of it tomorrow. Brock Yates' daughter, who recently wrote a book about Ferrari, will be at a pre-screen reception. Brenda Vernor, Mr. Ferrari's long-time secretary, called me from Maranello on Christmas day, and told me that she and Piero Ferrari both saw it and found it enjoyable. Fred

Tell us about the screening. It sounds interesting.

There was a rumor a few years ago that Brenda Vernor would be writing her memoir. Has anything come of that?

Where can we find information about the book Yates’s daughter has written about Ferrari? I’ve heard nothing about it until reading your post.

    Thanks.

Paula Yates, Brock's widow, and their daughter Stacy did a book signing before the screening, and a presentation with Q & A afterwards. The book is an update of the 1991 original, with certain sensitive language removed to make it more acceptable in today's world of micro-aggressions. Stacy said that it was not translated into Italian, as the Italian publishing house wanted all references to Mussolini, Hitler and WW II generally, removed, which she refused to do. I don't have the book, but I believe that Pam Yates said Penguin was the U.S. publisher. Brenda apparently wrote a book a while back, which she mentioned in a video she did in London in Dec. of 2022. I doubt very much that she has the desire to write another. In all the conversations we've had, she's never mentioned it to me. She is as close to Piero now as she ever was, and he has been very supportive of her. She has always been close to his family, and once even took his grandson Enzo Mattioli to London with her for Christmas. As for the movie itself, I enjoyed it, even though I'd had reservations about lean and tall Adam Driver, speaking in a tongue never used in public by Enzo Ferrari.

Thank you for that. I think I’ll skip the “revised” Yates book. Knowing Brock only through his prolific writing, over many years, I can’t help but wonder if he’d be pleased. Maybe he’d give family a pass, but I bet he’d savage any outsider who changed a word of his prose. The book caused quite a stir about sensationalism when it was published. I’m pretty sure that gave him satisfaction. My wife read it to me in the car when we were on holiday.

Saw it today. Entertaining movie? Yes.
    Hard core car flick? No.

I enjoyed it. Forgot how much I knew about von Trips, Portago, Hawthorne...

How ‘Ferrari’ Sourced $70 Million Vintage Cars to Create Authentic Racing Sequences

    ...
picture vehicle supervisor Danny Triphook says that as the production reached out to members of a worldwide network of auto collectors who they hoped would loan their vehicles to use in the sequence, his collaborators’ confidence was buoyed after unexpectedly obtaining access to car they had initially lumped in the latter category.

“We thought we were not going to be able to find the car that won the Mille Miglia, the one driven by Piero Taruffi,” says Triphook. “But what happened is that whilst talking to one of the owners, he said, ‘What do you think about having the actual winning car of the film on the film? A friend of mine owns it, and I can just speak to him and we can have it.’”

    ...
He says that a lot of collectors ended up joining simply because they learned their friends already had done so. “Once some important collectors in Europe said yes, the other ones just wanted to follow — ‘I’m not going to miss this’,” he remembers. “Some of the cars we had there, they [cost] $10, 20, 40, 70 million dollars, and we were using them on set — you can imagine the insurance policy for those.”

As costly as it might have been, Triphook says that the price tag was worth it when he saw the look on Mann’s face. “I turned up on set with 40 vehicles — I don’t know how many million dollars we had that day on that square,” he remembers. “But it was such a strong display of machines that Michael got out of his van and he didn’t know where to look. And he made us all stop all the crew, and he documented every single car in that square for half an hour with his camera team.”
