I was pleased to receive the invitation to the FoW track day at Summit Point in late April. I was less than pleased to read that they require a mandatory $800 “inspection” at FoW service dept. before the event.

I attend multiple track days through PCA, BWWCCA, SCCA, Chin, etc. many of which require third party inspections, which I can typically obtain for less than $100. The requirement for an $800 inspection at FoW service is absurd.

I won’t be attending out of principle. There are many other HPDE events that don’t gouge you.

Wonder if they do anything else for the 800 like swap brake fluid, corner balance. Worth asking

I suppose the bigger question is what are they doing? Figuring their hourly rate is close to $200 an hour......that is four hours with the car. A Virginia Safety inspection takes 15 minutes which checks the major items. It doesn't check for suspension cracks......nor does it examine all four wheels but four hours is a really long time to "inspect" the car. Not even a PPI takes four hours unless they are doing a compression or leak down test.

Also ......and I am speculating......insurance costs and other overhead may have simply shifted to the "inspection".

As someone who has sat in their customer service waiting room........the cars are on the lifts for hours with no one even touching them.

Just be grateful a Ferrari dealer is still doing track days. The FOH track days were epic. Imagine a F1 car hitting the track.

I assume the $799 track inspection is for not only the inspection and also the track day in itself where they provide an instructor, food, etc. I did a few track days last year and they were all around that price when your getting catered food, instructor, etc. I'll probably go

Worth asking what’s included in the $800 fee, but personally I wouldn’t pay that for one day access to any track, unless it was a ‘once in a lifetime, bucket list item’, and this was my only chance to gain access.

Chin typically charges less than that for two days at their venues, and that includes inspection and instructor for the day, as well as two classroom sessions. With Chin, you can also pay a one time $60 per year tech inspection fee.

Well, I literally just returned back to FL from two days at VIR (with FCA) and it would’ve been tempting to leave the 458 up there somewhere just for a one day visit.

The FCA event was really top notch, sounds like FOW will be the same at Summit.

VIR is a blast. The back straight wide open before the left hander builds character.

Lap time recorded 151 mph with the FCA President in the car with me at the time. But I wimped out and braked a bit early, not wanting to tumble down the roller coaster.

If I’d had the same confidence in the 458’s brakes as the STO, I might have kept it open a bit longer. I know one fella hit over 160 in his 458, which I firmly believe is possible if my Speedo was correct.

VIR is a must return, most likely in the fall. Next time I’ll learn the Oak Tree turn a bit better

I have Watkins coming up (4 days of tracking), and later this year would like to do Barber, Atlanta and Daytona.

Between multiple Sebring events, Homestead and the FIRM - It’s been a robust year of tracking, though I’m still chasing an intermittent code at full throttle near redline (right fuel bank lean but I don’t think it’s the pump). Hope to get it sorted before The Glen.

I was on the Glen more than 30 years ago in my Datsun 240z, until someone kicked me off (they’d left the gate open, lol). This time around it’s payback time…..

    devil's advocating here:
At that price point, it's not likely to be crowded and you would get many laps in without traffic in an arrive and drive experience!
    also
If you are buying a new V8 or V12 the $800 track fee is small compared to the depreciation you are likely to experience in the first decade of ownership. I suspect new car buyers are not sweating the depreciation!

I personally could not justify that pricepoint at Summit Point! I have had SO much fun there, but their track surface on the big track and the Jefferson track was terrible at the time and Shenandoah is not new anymore. I was there last week with FCA for an auto-x and that surface wasn't great which leads me to believe things haven't changed. Now I haven't been on their tracks in several years so hopefully, they have been resurfaced!

If someone is there in April, please report the track conditions. I can’t make that date, but Chin is there late summer and I *may* go, surface dependent.

The Summit Point main track is my home track and I raced on it in a Spec Racer Ford in the SCCA MARRS series as recently as last month. I also typically attend the Summit Point “Friday at the Track” HPDE events which are $250, have little traffic in the advanced group, and probably 2.5-3 hr of track time (so hard to justify a one day event with FoW for $800 when I go there every month, sometimes several times a month).

The track surface on Summit Point main is in great condition, the curbs have been repainted and they did a lot of great upkeep over the winter. The track has a very “vintage” feel to it, which is why it is a popular track for vintage racing and it’s not uncommon to see a vintage 1960s F1 car out there.

FYI I received an email from FCA Mid Atlantic Region and they’re offering a $200 discount off the $800 registration for this event if you’re an FCA member. Nice gesture, unfortunately I’m occupied that day and can’t make the event, but I will be at Summit Point this Friday running in the SCCA WDCR Time Trials.

It’s a great track and definitely worth the Chin experience when they come. I recommend staying at a hotel in downtown Winchester, VA which is a really nice old town area, good restaurants, nice walking area etc.

Also, for the record, Aston Martin of Washington had a private track day at Summit Point last year with a beautiful catered lunch, arrive and drive experience, coaches, and 5+ hours of track time with just 20 guests…I went, in my 458, and It was complimentary (and kind of made me want to order a new Vantage :)

Curious question for you guys. When you do these events do they usually have a photographer covering the event or selling shots to the participants?

I am a hobbyist motorsports photographer. Would love to attend some more local events if people would be interested in professional quality shots. I am next heading to Mid-Ohio for the IMSA race but would like to get more events on my calendar for this summer.

In the past, spectators would show up and many would take photos of the day. Although they were usually connected to FOW, FCA MAR or knew everyone from here, so it wasn't a problem. FOW was never walking around checking people out, but that could have changed.
The rub might come from soliciting photography.
