Not true, when news or weather forcasters refer to the Northeast they included all states north of the Mason-Dixon line. PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, VT, NH ME and plus maybe MD & DE. However when a business applies a marketing region to that same geographic region. Things are a bit different.

What was 1 area now becomes 3 separate, New England Region made up of Eastern CT, RI, MA, VT, NH and ME.
A Northeast Region which is the New York Tristate Region of South Western CT, all of NY State and Northern NJ. And then a Mid Atlantic Region made up of Southern NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC & Northern VA. (Plus WV).

If you apply the same geographic area as California to the Northeastern US it isn't even close as that area has a population of over 70 million people almost twice that of California.

I seem to recall reading an article mentioning Montana as the state with the 3rd most Ferraris registered, although that makes little sense.

I would think that the SF bay area (including San Jose) would have the largest population of Ferraris in the US, but maybe LA has as many, but I've not seen a count there. I'm aware of several 50+ collections, owned by high tech business people. I was driving home last week in the 430, and there were 5 Ferraris in the commute, another 430, mine, a 355, and two 12 cylinders. Only in Marin, I suspect.

Many people register their toys in Montana because there is no sales-tax and only a PO box is required to register a vehicle.

This isn't too hard. Just look at how many Ferrari dealers there are in each respective region.

In NY tri-state area, there are...let's see...

    Miller Motorcars

    Wide World of Cars

    Ferrari of Long Island

Ferrari Maserati of Central NJ, but I'm not sure if that counts.

There are also four in Southern California and two in NorCal.

    Three in Texas and Floria.

Hey, there's even one in Hawaii :D

Based on that, I'd say California is first for sure. Florida and NY probably tied, since there are only two in NY, but one is in Greenwich which borders NY (my county)

As nsxnick said, people register there due to lack of sales tax. I've seen exotics all over the country with Montana license plates. I live in Colorado and go to college in Georgia. In Colorado I'd see Montana exotics from time to time and wonder what was going on - I chalked it up to its proximity to Colorado. Then I came to Georgia and I still saw them! Some research taught me that this was not uncommon for the reason stated.
