I was looking at some old photos I took and found this one from 1991 at the Michigan International Speedway. In the first picture, you'll see a series of several pace cars. I remembered that the car seen behind the flagpole was a Ferrari, but had no idea which one it was.

I did some searching and found that it was a Ferrari PPG I.D.E.A, a one off car that paced a lot of Indy events. I found some closeup pictures online and heard the car was auctioned off. Anyone know the whereabouts of this bizarre car?

Wow, they've really added some decals. I know some people would rather stay anonymous, are you at liberty to say who's collection that is?

Just checked out the thread, excellent collections! I loved the 410 Superamerica. I definitely want to visit the west coast sometime and check out the car scene there.

Oh yes I am very familiar with that car. I was just talking about it the other day.

Based on a Mondial t it was the star of the PPG show at a lot of Indy Car venues. I was attracted to it then and remember watching & hearing it as if it were just yesterday.

More: At an original cost of approximately $1,000,000 this car warrants serious attention from any Ferrari or racing enthusiast and would consitute a rare addition to any renowned collection.

Chassis number 76390 was introduced in 1989 at Laguna Seca Raceway, California, as part of the PPG Pace Car program, which ran from 1980-1997 with a team of fourteen women drivers who earned recognition in various forms of auto racing. Subsequently, this unique Ferrari paced dozens of PPG Indy Car World Series events throughout the United States and appeared at various track and show events throughout Europe in the mid 1990s.
Because they were built for demonstration purposes rather than street use, most of the remaining one-of-a-kind PPG Pace Cars are today in museums. This chassis is the only one currently available for purchase by the public, although it must be mentioned that it is not street legal.

    Thanks for the info Mike!

It says, "This chassis is the only one currently available for purchase by the public..." does that mean that there are a few more out there, but just not available to purchase, or is that the ONLY ONE ever built?

Because I noticed that John Goodman's had more decals on it. I didn't know if it was a different one or if he just added the decals to the existing car.

Oh yes. All of the PPG pace cars were "one offs" and all were unique.

I took it as the Mondial t was the only PPG pace car that was ever put up for sale. The others were permanently called for by sponsors, dismantled or crushed like say GM would do with a show or concept car.

    Neat piece of history.

Strange, I wonder what prompted them to sell that one and not all the others.

And actually, most of GM's concept cars are on display at the GM Heritage Center in Michigan. It's AWESOME.

    Chris,

Those are cool but understand that GM (and other manufacturers) has only a fraction of all of the concept cars they have made over the years. Think about that. How many cool cars are gone? Years & years of them. Some years each brand would have two or more, and we are talking 60, 70, 80 years of them.

Hi all, I normally lurk in F-Chat, but saw this topic and wanted to add some to it. I also belong to an online club for the Subaru SVX. We have an annual GTG in Reading, Pa., every year and last year we were able to get Subaru of America to bring its PPG pace car to our meet. The car was a 1991 and had extremely low miles (I think a little over 1300) and no battery, but the exterior was in fantastic condition, all things considered. It had not been started or driven in many years, so it was transported, wheeled on and off for the meet but never started. This thread makes me curious as to how many other pace cars are still out there. Also, I guess they were running a special on half-cut windows in the early '90s.

I have some shots of it somewhere too. That was a nice garage tour.

It is kind of an odd looking car but still pretty cool to see. There was also a Newman race 308 in the same collection. Now that was a beautiful car!!

As a matter of fact I think I see myself in the background of one of Manuel's pics. :)

Well...GM still owns and stores about 800 cars. As many as 200 at any time are at the Heritage center.

That said... the cars that were destroyed since the 50's... many are still hiding in retiree's garages for fear of losing their pension. They would follow the hauler to the scrap yard, and pay over scrap for the vehicle, and take it home. Shhh... I know of one such car from Lincoln that is VERY important in history!
