Ferrari have confirmed they will build a sportscar version of their F430 road car.

Built to GT2 regulations, the F430 will be ready for competition in 2006, and will be built to compete in national and international GT races such as the FIA GT championship or the British GT championship.

The F430, based on the 8-cylinder sports car, will make its testing debut at Fiorano in October and is being developed for customer racing teams.

A Ferrari spokesperson told Autosport-Atlas: "More will be announced later but we have had lots of interest from Italian and British teams. We are looking at producing approximately 20 cars for next season."

In the FIA GT championship, Ferrari are represented in GT2 with their 360 Modena model, and have Maranello 550 and 575 GTC's running in GT1 classes
