I'm looking for an interesting red for a 430 Spider, something other than corsa or scuderia. I like the metallic reds but rubino is a little too dark and purple and fiorano is not red enough. I'm looking for a color that Ferrari has used on a previous model, not a custom match-to-sample color. Did Ferrari ever do a true candy apple red? Other suggestions? Photos greatly appreciated.

They have barchetta red available for 430's. It is a dark metalic with a purplish tone that I personally don't like. 360's were available with Fiorano red which I really liked and had planned to order on the 430 but that's how it goes. The factory does offer the option of choosing a discontinued color for about 2500. if memory serves, but I was chicken about the custom nature of the job and possible long delay. They will also paint a car any color if you provide a sample for about 5500 I believe. It would be interesting to know how these special orders come out.

Just FYI, I think you were wise to stick with a standard paint. A friend here in the Bay Area ordered a paint-to-sample 430 at the same time I specced my car, so we expected delivery pretty close together. My car showed up in Sep, his is still out there somewhere, and the last time I saw him and asked about it, he just threw his hands in the air. If you want a special color, be prepared to wait.

Barchetta was (and I would assume still is, but they could have changed it) a non-metallic color - burgundy in the shade, but very close to corsa in the sunlight. More traditional, much closer to the older Ferrari reds than the Corsa or Scuderia. I thought the Rossa Rubino was pretty darn close to a candy apple - perhaps just a touch more burgundy...did the sample you looked at show under flourescents, regular light bulbs, or in the sun? With the off-red cars, the difference between shade and sunlight is night and day. I actually always thought of the Fiorano as being a bit darker/more purple than the Rubino...hard to say as I've never seen it on the same model side by side. I would see if you can get some 'in the sunlight' pictures of both and compare side to side...if Rubino is offered as a non-$2500 option, it might be worth a second look at it on a car (pictures were floating around here a little while back of a Rubino 575 SA which showed the color pretty well, and finding a fiorano car shouldn't be too hard, I think Martin has a 360 spider on his website that is Fiorano red...both sets of pics were in sunlight so maybe that will help contrast the 2 together)

That's the problem I'm having. The attached photos are of the same Rosso Rubino 430 but the color looks different in each. Am I right in assuming that the 4th shot, the one with the car parked in dappled shade, most accurately reproduces the color?

Gary's comment about the delay caused by ordering non-standard colors makes me nervous. Have others experienced the same thing?

The second shot actually looks more accurate to Rubino than the others IF you consider the color in the sun. In the shade, any of these metallics are going to look much darker, be it Fiorano, Rubino, Monza, even the non-metallic Barchetta. But then again, how often will you be driving when it isn't sunny ;)

That link shows what looks most like Rubino to my eyes; when I see that car, it looks like what I'm used to seeing in person for Rubino. Scroll down to see it in bright sun as well.

Is there a difference between Rosso Rubino and Rubino Micalizzato?

Thanks, everybody, for your help. FerrariChat and its members are a great community and an invaluable resource.
